Job Description
About STC
STC is a science, sensors, and systems company founded in 1979. We continually expand our Earth and Space Sciences support capabilities to NASA, NOAA, DoD, and other Federal and State agencies. Our staff support many of the operational missions that monitor the heartbeat of our planet through a growing number of Earth Observing System of Systems platforms and direct field research. We also research and investigate leading-edge observing technologies and assist in their integration into operations.
STC offers competitive benefits to include health, dental, vision, FSA, life, disability, 401K (matching), tuition reimbursement, bonus/incentive programs, and various other plans.
Overview
The EOSDIS Evolution and Development (EED) program supports NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) in enabling global, open access to critical Earth observation data. STC is growing its EED support team and is seeking a Senior Discipline Engineer to contribute independently to cloud-native earth science data development within the EED program.
The Senior Discipline Engineer operates with a high degree of autonomy within an assigned EED program train (Science & Data preferred), contributing to architecture decisions, cloud infrastructure delivery, and CI/CD pipeline management. A Product Owner (PO) variant of this role also exists for the Science & Data train, in which the engineer serves as backlog owner, defines acceptance criteria, and may represent the team at external technical forums such as AGU.
Primary Responsibilities
• Deliver in-depth engineering contributions within the assigned EED program train, including cloud infrastructure, data pipeline development, and CI/CD management.
• Implement and maintain scalable AWS solutions (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS) supporting earth science data workflows.
• Build and maintain CI/CD automation pipelines (Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity) and enforce Git/GitHub workflow standards.
• Design and optimize relational database schemas and queries for earth science data applications.
• Work independently on complex engineering tasks; contribute to architecture and design discussions.
• For the Product Owner variant: own and prioritize the team backlog, define acceptance criteria for sprint deliverables, and represent the team at scientific and technical conferences.
• Participate in Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) planning events, Program Increment (PI) planning, sprint ceremonies, backlog refinement, and technical reviews.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams within a large, multi-team Agile environment to deliver cloud-native earth science data capabilities on schedule.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipeline automation, code review, testing, and documentation in accordance with program standards.
Job Requirements
• 6+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated proficiency in cloud-native development
• In-depth knowledge of AWS cloud services (EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS)
• CI/CD pipeline tool proficiency (Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity)
• Proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows
• Agile/Scrum development experience in a team environment
• Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL
• Strong collaboration and written communication skills
Desired Skills and Experience
• Experience with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) methodology
• Proficiency with the Atlassian tool suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
• Experience presenting at scientific or technical conferences (e.g., AGU)
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident / Green Card holder.
