Job Description
About Science and Technology Corporation
About Science and Technology Corporation (STC): STC is a U.S. government contractor providing scientific, engineering, and technical support to federal agencies, with deep roots in NOAA, NASA, and DoD programs. Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Hampton, VA, STC staff support a growing number of operational missions that monitor the Earth through Earth-observing systems and satellite platforms and through direct field research. STC also researches and investigates leading-edge observing technologies and assesses their applicability to operational missions. STC's NOAA Programs team supports a broad range of operational meteorological, environmental, and geospatial programs.
About the AWIPS HIVE Program
STC is seeking candidates to support the National Weather Service (NWS) on the AWIPS Application Environment contract (commonly referred to as HIVE). AWIPS (Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System) is the mission-critical platform used by forecasters at National Weather Service sites nationwide to analyze environmental data and issue the forecasts, watches, and warnings that protect lives and property. Under the HIVE modernization initiative, STC provides engineering and technical talent in direct support of a major cloud transformation effort to move AWIPS from a legacy desktop system to a modern, cloud-native web application built on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The program operates in a collaborative Agile environment and involves migrating complex operational meteorological workflows, tools, and data visualization capabilities to a microservices-based architecture with a React/TypeScript frontend and Java/Spring Boot microservices backend.
About This Role
STC is hiring a Fullstack Software Engineer to work across the HIVE program's two core repositories: a React/TypeScript micro-frontend monorepo and a Java/Spring Boot microservices backend, together powering the operational data visualization and management platform at the heart of the AWIPS modernization effort. You will build end-to-end features from map rendering and data overlays in the UI down to the APIs, caching, and data contracts that serve them. This position requires US Citizenship.
Specific Duties Will Include
• Build fullstack features spanning the React/TypeScript micro-frontend monorepo and the Java/Spring Boot microservices backend
• Develop geospatial visualization components using MapLibre GL and/or Deck.gl within a module-federation micro-frontend architecture
• Implement RESTful API endpoints in a multi-module Maven monorepo of independently deployable microservices
• Write clean, tested, well-typed code following each repository's established conventions
• Debug across the full stack, from map rendering in the browser to caching behavior in backend services
• Maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI and contribute to Kubernetes Helm chart maintenance
• Implement JWT-based authentication and authorization workflows (OAuth2/OIDC)
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and contribute to technical design reviews
• Leverage AI-assisted development tooling (the program uses Claude Code extensively with CI-integrated AI code review)
Job Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
• 5+ years of experience in fullstack web application development
• React 19 and TypeScript; building component-driven UIs at scale
• Geospatial visualization experience with MapLibre GL and/or Deck.gl
• Java 17+ and Spring Boot 3/4; RESTful microservices in a multi-module Maven project
• PostgreSQL and Redis, including cluster-mode caching considerations
• Docker and Kubernetes; writing and maintaining Helm charts
• GitLab CI/CD pipeline experience
• AWS services (AppConfig, Cognito, ECR, or equivalent)
• JWT-based authentication/authorization (OAuth2/OIDC)
• 5+ years of experience with AWS cloud services and development
• US Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications
• Vite build tooling and Module Federation for micro-frontend architecture
• Zustand state management
• Tailwind CSS and accessible component libraries (React Aria Components or similar)
• Jest, React Testing Library, and Playwright for end-to-end testing
• pnpm monorepo workspace experience
• OPA/Rego policy-as-code for authorization
• GIS or geospatial domain experience
• AI-assisted development workflow experience
• Federal or government contracting background
• Understanding of weather data formats (GRIB, NetCDF) and processing requirements
Work Arrangement
Fully remote.
Citizenship Requirement
US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status required.
