Overview

Being good neighbors – helping people, investing in our communities, and making the world a better place – is who we are at State Farm. It is at the core of how we operate and the reason for our success. We're moving with urgency to become a Next Gen Good Neighbor, with technology that strengthens human connections and enhances the customer experience. As an employee, you'll spend less time navigating systems and more time applying judgment, empathy, and expertise in the moments that matter most. HYBRID: Qualified candidates (in or near hub locations listed below) should plan to spend time working from home and some time working in the office as part of our hybrid work environment. HUB LOCATIONS: Bloomington, IL; Richardson, TX; Tempe, AZ; Dunwoody, GA SPONSORSHIP: Applicants are required to be eligible to lawfully work in the U.S. immediately; employer will not sponsor applicants for U.S. work authorization (e.g., H-1B visa) for this opportunity.

Grow Your Skills, Grow Your Potential

Responsibilities

The Federated Identity Team (FIT) exists to simplify the lives of users and developers by providing an easy, intuitive, and secure login experience - achieving one person, one identity. We own how applications across State Farm onboard to Microsoft Entra ID: app registration, single sign-on, and choosing the right authentication pattern - client credentials (secrets, certificates, or workload identity) for service-to-service, authorization code flow with PKCE for client applications. We build FedHub (the Federation Hub) to do that. FedHub gives application owners a single, straightforward place to manage their Entra applications, and it enforces security controls around application configuration that cannot be enforced through the Entra UI. It also handles permission requests, admin-consent workflows, and SAML/OIDC/SCIM configuration. The stack is React and TypeScript in the FedHub UI, a GraphQL API (Apollo Server) on AWS Lambda behind API Gateway, DynamoDB for state, and integrations into Microsoft Graph, ServiceNow, and ARTS. We ship through GitLab CI to AWS with infrastructure in Terraform, and we use AI-assisted development tooling as a normal part of how we build. This is a small team with a large surface area. Individual contributions are highly visible, additional ownership is available immediately to anyone who wants it, and we are specifically looking for someone who wants it.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, integrate, deploy, and support enterprise applications across the full software stack.
  • Own significant portions of the migration from GitLab-based provisioning to an event-driven AWS architecture, including the design decisions - not just the implementation.
  • Build and refine consumer-friendly interfaces for genuinely complex identity workflows: app registration, SAML and OIDC configuration, claims mapping, SCIM provisioning, permission requests.
  • Extend the GraphQL API and its integrations into Microsoft Graph and other enterprise systems.
  • Work within and strengthen our authorization model - Entra delegated tokens, an API Gateway token authorizer, and schema-directive-based RBAC with resource-level ownership enforcement.
  • Contribute to Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and operational support of what you ship.
  • Partner directly with application teams across the enterprise, translating their integration needs into product capability.

Qualifications

Key Skills & Abilities

  • A track record of owning work end to end. You can take a loosely defined problem, ask the questions needed to scope it, and drive it into production without being assigned each next step.
  • Initiative and follow-through. You notice the gap - the unclear requirement, the flaky test, the undocumented process, the thing nobody owns - and you close it rather than route around it. You see work through to done.
  • An appetite for more scope. You look for the next hard problem instead of waiting for it to be handed to you, and you are comfortable being accountable for a system running in production.
  • Ability to navigate and build relationships across multiple teams and levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to foster innovation, encourage diversity of thought, and incorporate new ideas.
  • Learning agility. Identity is a deep domain; you will not know all of it on day one, and you should be genuinely interested in learning it.
  • Experience or comfort working in an agile environment.
  • A strong drive for results.

Technical Competencies Primary Skills

  • Design, develop, integrate, deploy, and support enterprise applications.
  • A track record of being able to deliver complex solutions with consumer friendly interfaces on AWS.
  • An understanding of State Farm application engineering practices, and either a track record of helping other software engineers improve their craft or a genuine interest in growing into that.
  • Strong JavaScript and TypeScript fundamentals - not just framework familiarity.
  • Production experience building UIs with a modern component-based framework, React strongly preferred.
  • Substantial back-end experience building and operating server-side services (Node.js preferred), including API design and working with a database.
  • Hands-on AWS experience: Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, IAM, and event-driven design patterns. This is central to the work ahead.
  • API development and usage (REST and/or GraphQL).
  • Automated testing as a normal part of development.
  • CI/CD experience (GitLab preferred) and comfortable Git-based collaboration. Preferred Skills Depth in several of these is more valuable than passing familiarity with all of them.
  • UI frameworks: React - the framework the FedHub UI is built on.
  • GraphQL specifically - Apollo Client and/or Apollo Server.
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform/OpenTofu).
  • Identity and access management: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Graph.
  • Credential management: workload identity (federated credentials), AWS Secrets Manager.
  • Logging, tracing, and reporting (Dynatrace, AWS CloudWatch).
  • MUI or another comprehensive component library used at scale.
  • Accessibility standards and testing.
  • Prior experience on a platform team whose users are other engineers.
