The Electronic Safety/H2S Technician installs, operates, inspects, calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots electronic safety and hydrogen sulfide monitoring equipment used at oil and gas locations throughout the Permian Basin and Southeastern New Mexico. This field-based position helps protect employees, contractors, customers, and the public by ensuring gas-detection, alarm, communication, and related safety systems are properly deployed and functioning as required.

The technician works independently and as part of a field team in active drilling, completion, production, construction, and industrial environments. The position requires strong attention to detail, sound technical judgment, accurate documentation, professional customer service, and the ability to respond promptly to equipment alarms, malfunctions, changing site conditions, and emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Electronic Safety and H2S Equipment

  • Install, position, connect, test, operate, and remove fixed and portable gas-detection systems, electronic alarms, warning devices, communication equipment, and related safety components according to job requirements and manufacturer guidance.
  • Perform bump tests, calibrations, functional checks, preventive maintenance, sensor replacement, battery service, firmware or configuration updates, and minor field repairs within assigned authority.
  • Verify that monitors, sensors, horns, strobes, control panels, repeaters, power supplies, cabling, and accessories are compatible, correctly configured, and ready for service before use.
  • Troubleshoot equipment faults, communication failures, power issues, alarm conditions, calibration errors, and damaged components; restore service when qualified or promptly escalate the issue.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and serviceable equipment and protect sensitive electronic components from weather, contamination, impact, and improper handling.

Site Monitoring and Field Support

  • Conduct pre-job equipment checks and participate in site orientations, job safety analyses, tailgate meetings, and customer-required safety activities.
  • Continuously observe gas-detection readings, system status, environmental conditions, wind direction, work activity, and personnel exposure risks during assigned operations.
  • Maintain awareness of alarm set points, muster areas, escape routes, respiratory-protection expectations, emergency contacts, and site-specific response procedures.
  • Notify affected personnel immediately of alarms, unsafe conditions, equipment failures, or changing hazards and follow the established escalation and emergency-response process.
  • Provide clear field guidance on the location, purpose, limitations, and proper use of assigned electronic safety equipment without exceeding the technician's training or authority.

Breathing Air and Safety Systems

  • Assist with the setup, inspection, operation, and shutdown of breathing-air trailers, compressors, cascade systems, manifolds, air-line connections, escape packs, and related equipment when assigned and trained.
  • Inspect hoses, fittings, regulators, cylinders, masks, harnesses, and associated components for damage, cleanliness, correct pressure, and serviceability.
  • Monitor system pressure, air supply, alarms, and equipment condition and immediately report leaks, pressure loss, contamination concerns, or other deficiencies.
  • Maintain emergency equipment, signage, windsocks, barricades, and designated safety stations in accessible and ready condition.

Inspection Documentation and Inventory

  • Complete accurate calibration logs, bump-test records, inspection forms, service tickets, equipment issue and return records, daily activity reports, and customer documentation.
  • Record equipment identification numbers, sensor types, calibration-gas information, readings, alarm events, maintenance performed, parts used, and unresolved deficiencies.
  • Maintain assigned inventory of monitors, sensors, calibration gas, regulators, batteries, chargers, cables, tools, replacement parts, personal protective equipment, and consumable supplies.
  • Tag, isolate, and report damaged, expired, contaminated, or out-of-service equipment and prevent its use until repaired, inspected, or replaced by authorized personnel.

Safety and Emergency Response

  • Follow company, customer, and site safety requirements and use required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Stop work, warn personnel, and initiate the applicable notification or emergency procedure when an imminent danger, H2S alarm, equipment failure, or other serious hazard is identified.
  • Remain calm and communicate clearly during alarms, evacuations, rescues, medical events, severe weather, spills, fires, and other emergencies.
  • Support incident reporting and fact gathering by preserving relevant equipment data, readings, inspection records, photographs, and field observations as directed.
  • Report injuries, near misses, property damage, environmental concerns, unsafe behavior, and equipment defects promptly and accurately.

Customer Service and Team Coordination

  • Coordinate with customers, consultants, supervisors, dispatchers, operations personnel, and other technicians to confirm scope, equipment needs, site access, scheduling, and service expectations.
  • Communicate professionally with customer representatives and provide timely updates regarding equipment status, alarm events, service interruptions, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with mobilization and demobilization, loading and unloading, equipment staging, housekeeping, and other field tasks necessary to complete the assignment safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in company training, competency evaluations, equipment demonstrations, safety meetings, and continuous-improvement activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience with electronic gas-detection, H2S safety, instrumentation, industrial electronics, field safety equipment, oil and gas operations, or a closely related technical field preferred; equivalent training and aptitude may be considered.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with the ability to use basic hand tools, meters, calibration equipment, mobile applications, and electronic documentation systems.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, labels, safety data, site plans, and written work instructions.
  • Ability to recognize abnormal readings, equipment faults, unsafe conditions, and situations requiring immediate escalation.
  • Strong communication, documentation, customer-service, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record consistent with company requirements.
  • Ability to complete company-provided and customer-required training and demonstrate competency for assigned equipment and duties.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One or more years of experience servicing portable or fixed gas-detection systems in oil and gas, petrochemical, construction, or industrial environments.
  • Experience with multi-gas monitors, fixed-point sensors, wireless monitoring networks, control panels, telemetry, breathing-air systems, or related electronic safety equipment.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification after hire.

  • Understand the operating principles and limitations of electronic gas-detection and alarm equipment and recognize when specialist or manufacturer support is required.
  • Perform precise calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation while working in demanding field conditions.
  • Prioritize safety over production pressure and communicate stop-work concerns respectfully and confidently.
  • Work independently with limited supervision while remaining responsive to dispatch, supervisors, customers, and changing job requirements.
  • Maintain attention during long monitoring assignments and respond immediately to alarms, system faults, or changing site conditions.
  • Safeguard company and customer equipment, confidential information, passwords, configuration data, and electronic records.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

This is a field-based position performed primarily at oil and gas, construction, industrial, shop, yard, and customer locations throughout the Permian Basin and Southeastern New Mexico.

  • Work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, wind, dust, rain, noise, darkness, and other changing weather and field conditions.
  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs or ladders, and work on uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and respiratory equipment and remain capable of responding promptly to alarms and emergency conditions.
  • Drive to remote work locations and work variable schedules, extended shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and occasional overnight travel as operations require.
  • Work near moving equipment, vehicle traffic, pressurized systems, chemicals, hydrocarbons, electrical equipment, and areas where toxic or flammable gases may be present.
