Original job description

Overview

Within SSOE’s Tool Install division, we specialize in high-tech Tool Installation design, offering top-tier design and engineering services to a diverse array of clients and markets. Our team is composed of highly skilled and knowledgeable professionals who excel across various disciplines. We pride ourselves on our cross-disciplinary approach, which allows us to understand and address our clients' needs more comprehensively than traditional, siloed methods. What sets us apart is our ability to seamlessly conceptualize, plan, and detail every aspect of design. Our in-house experts collaborate closely, optimizing and enhancing our work through multi-discipline strategy sessions. By leveraging cutting-edge techniques and state-of-the-art software, we deliver industry-leading technology and innovative solutions from day one.

We are seeking a Layout Designer / Layout Engineer to support the design and coordination of process equipment layouts for semiconductor fabrication and other high tech manufacturing facilities. Working under the direction of senior layout staff and discipline leads, you will help develop practical, code compliant, and constructible layout solutions that support schedule, safety, and quality goals. This role is well suited to someone building technical judgment and coordination skills in an exciting project environment.

AI and Innovation

At SSOE, we don’t just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, you’ll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.

Responsibilities

Assist with planning production facilities and equipment layouts, learning to evaluate efficient use of space and process flow design constraints.
Interpret supplier equipment drawings and requirements; develop tool CAD blocks (2D and/or 3D) or Revit RFAs based on supplier drawings.
Support development of manufacturing process layouts based on client tool quantities, priorities, and goby information for greenfield and retrofit spaces.
Assist with design calculations, routing evaluations, and technical assessments for process utilities, support systems, and equipment interfaces, with review by senior staff.
Prepare drawings, models, and documentation for tool connections, equipment clearances, utility routing, service access, and integration with existing facility systems.
Support coordination with project managers, discipline leads, vendors, and contractors to help resolve design requirements and interface conflicts.
Attend design reviews, client meetings, and coordination workshops; capture comments and incorporate feedback into revisions.
Participate in site walks, verify field conditions, and help identify clashes, interferences, or scope gaps.
Help document risks related to schedule, installation sequencing, safety, access, and operational continuity within active production facilities.
Compile as built information, redlines, closeout comments, and construction support documentation to support package turnover.
Follow client safety protocols, cleanroom requirements, and facility standards, with attention to contamination control, access limitations, and operational sensitivity.
Build working knowledge of National Fire Code and National Electrical Code layout restrictions and requirements.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering or related engineering discipline, or equivalent layout experience.
Approximately 2+ years of relevant experience supporting semiconductor, high tech, cleanroom, tool install, or process equipment installation projects; internship or co-op experience considered.
Working knowledge of, or coursework in, layout philosophies: product line, process layout, cellular manufacturing, densepack vs flexible layouts.
Interest in and developing understanding of tool hookup design, subfab rack and lateral systems, utility coordination, and facility modification in semiconductor fabrication environments.
Ability to read and mark up drawings with attention to constructability, safety, and code compliance.
Clear, professional written and verbal communication with internal teams, vendors, and contractors.
Exposure to Automated Material Handling systems is a plus.
Proficient with AutoCAD; exposure to Revit desirable. Organized, with the ability to track multiple assignments, review cycles, and deadlines.
Willingness to learn, take direction, and follow technical issues through to resolution.
Salary Range: $70,000 - $100,000/year depending on location, education, depth of relevant experience, and any specialized licensure/certifications. Opportunity for ample rewards, leadership incentive components, and generous bonus opportunities.
Benefits: Includes comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, 401K retirement savings plan (with company matching), opportunities for professional development and training (including support for relevant licensure & certifications), and generous PTO & paid holidays.
