Original job description

Location: Houston, Texas 77079 (REQUIRED – In-Office/On-Site work schedule) FLSA Status: Exempt About NuDevco Investments NuDevCo Investments - 30 year old entrepreneurial growth with a family office building both public and private companies. NuDevCo Investments exist in different sectors to include Retail Energy Provider, Logistics, Real Estate Financing, Commercial Solar, Energy Storage, Commercial EV Charing Stations, Beverage Distribution, Data Centers & Insurance. Job Summary We're looking for a Full-Stack DBA/Data Analyst with strong PostgreSQL skills to design and improve the data models behind our applications. You'll work with software engineers and business stakeholders to translate requirements into well-structured schemas, efficient queries, and reliable datasets. In this role, "full-stack" means working across the data lifecycle: understanding source data, shaping how it is stored and transformed, optimizing access, and making the results useful for analysis and application features. The primary focus is PostgreSQL schema design and performance. Reporting and visualization support that work; this is not primarily a dashboard-building or frontend development role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Schema design and data modeling
  • Translate business requirements and application access patterns into logical and physical data models
  • Design tables, relationships, keys, constraints, and data types that enforce integrity and make common operations efficient
  • Review existing schemas for duplication, weak relationships, unnecessary complexity, and growth-related risks
  • Make deliberate tradeoffs between normalization and denormalization, considering consistency, read performance, and write cost
  • Decide when to use relational columns versus JSONB, with appropriate indexing and validation strategies
  • Design for tenant isolation, audit history, retention, and evolving requirements
  • Document schemas, data definitions, and design decisions so others can interpret and extend them safely
  • PostgreSQL optimization and performance
  • Diagnose expensive queries using execution plans, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS), pg_stat_statements, and database metrics, with appropriate safeguards when running diagnostic queries
  • Design and tune composite, partial, expression, and covering indexes; choose index types based on workload and account for storage and write overhead
  • Optimize joins, filtering, sorting, pagination, aggregations, and bulk operations for application and analytical workloads
  • Investigate locking, long-running transactions, deadlocks, and connection pressure with application engineers
  • Assess planner statistics, autovacuum behavior, and table or index bloat when diagnosing performance issues
  • Evaluate partitioning, materialized views, and precomputed aggregates where their benefits justify maintenance and freshness tradeoffs
  • Establish baselines and test changes against representative data volumes and concurrent workloads, measuring latency, throughput, and resource use
  • Data analysis and validation
  • Profile source data and investigate missing values, duplicates, inconsistent relationships, and discrepancies across systems
  • Develop reusable SQL datasets and transformations that support application features, operational analysis, and reporting
  • Trace data from ingestion through transformations to outputs, and automate checks for accuracy and completeness
  • Translate findings into practical recommendations and use focused reports or visualizations when they help explain a decision
  • Safe changes and collaboration
  • Review application queries and ORM-generated SQL with developers before inefficient patterns become production problems
  • Develop version-controlled migrations and staged backfills that limit locking and preserve application compatibility
  • Define validation, rollback or recovery procedures, and post-release monitoring for database changes
  • Partner with infrastructure teammates on database observability, capacity planning, and backup and restore readiness
  • Protect sensitive data through appropriate access controls and secure handling practices
  • Prioritize improvements by measured impact and explain technical tradeoffs clearly Required Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience designing and improving PostgreSQL databases used by production applications
  • Strong relational modeling skills and an understanding of how schema choices affect correctness, performance, and maintainability
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex joins, CTEs, window functions, and practical query optimization using execution plans
  • A working understanding of PostgreSQL indexing, MVCC, transaction isolation, locking, planner statistics, and vacuuming
  • Experience profiling data, investigating discrepancies, and validating results against source records and business rules
  • Experience delivering schema changes and data migrations safely in actively used systems
  • Ability to use Python or another scripting language for repeatable analysis, benchmarking, and validation
  • Clear communication and comfort working through Git, code review, and documented design decisions Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with multi-tenant applications, background workers, or concurrent data-processing pipelines
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT workflows, API-based integrations, and data lineage
  • Experience with GIN or BRIN indexes, full-text search, partitioning, or large-table migrations
  • Familiarity with managed PostgreSQL platforms or connection pooling
  • Experience with a BI or visualization tool such as Power BI, Tableau, or Metabase Disclaimer The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed. NuDevco Investments is an equal opportunity employer.
