Job Summary: The Behavior Paraprofessional serves as a consistent, daily operational presence responsible for supervising in-school suspension (ISS), temporary behavioral cooling-off breaks, and hour-to-hour student detentions. By providing a dedicated, structured environment away from the main administrative lobby, this position ensures dysregulated students receive immediate support while maintaining a professional main office environment for visitors and relieving front-office administrative assistants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- ISS, Work Organization and Academic Continuity
- Manage the daily operation of the In-School Suspension (ISS) room and assigned detention hours.
- Actively coordinate with classroom teachers to request, collect, organize, and return physical and digital coursework for students serving ISS or temporary removals.
- Provide quiet, structured academic supervision to ensure students stay focused and complete assigned work during behavioral placements.
- Immediate Behavioral Resets and Main Office Decompression
- Serve as the immediate, consistent building point of contact for students needing a short-term 'cooling-off' break (15-30 minutes) from the classroom.
- Receive students immediately upon referral, preventing dysregulated students from waiting in the main office lobby or overwhelming front-office administrative assistants.
- Guide students through structured self-reflection prompts, de-escalation routines, and restorative re-entry conversations before they return to class.
- Administer daily check-in/check-out (CICO) protocols for targeted students on behavior plans.
- Hallway Management and Building Supervision
- Provide consistent daily presence in hallways during class transitions and instructional periods to intercept unexcused absences, tardies, and wandering.
- Assist with active supervision during high-traffic times (morning arrival, cafeteria lunch shifts, and afternoon dismissal).
- Escort students between classrooms, support services, or administrative offices when necessary.
- Data Tracking and Administrative Support
- Maintain accurate daily logs of ISS attendance, hallway pass compliance, temporary break durations, and detention completion in the Student Information System (SIS).
- Compile weekly behavioral trend summaries for administrative and MTSS/PBIS team review.
- Send routine student reminders/notifications regarding scheduled detention hours.
Physical Involvement:
- Position requires extended periods of sitting, standing and stooping for performing classroom activities and supervision.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
Mental Involvement:
- Strong emotional composure, firm and consistent boundary-setting, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to preserving a calm, supportive educational climate.
- Ability to respond to changing technology.
- Exercises a high level of confidentiality in handling District information.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks at once while dealing with constant interruptions.
Working Conditions:
- Normal classroom conditions.
- Occasional exposure to bodily fluids and airborne pathogens.
- Occasional lifting/restraining of students.
- May require exposure to outside temperatures and weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must meet Title One and Special Education requirements by one of the following:
- Passing score on Para Pro exam
- Two-year post secondary degree or equivalent
Experience:
- Minimum of two years working with adolescent youth in educational, athletic, or youth service capacity.
