About the Library

The Salt Lake City Public Library connects all people to free resources, knowledge, and one another to build a thriving community. Across nine locations and through outreach citywide, we are working toward a Salt Lake City where everyone belongs, where knowledge and opportunity are shared by all, and where our connections to one another make the whole community stronger. Guided by our 2026–2034 Strategic Plan, staff advance this work through four priorities: creating belonging through access, reading and literacy for all, strengthening civic life, and building the capacity to sustain our impact.

Library employees are stewards of this vision in every interaction. They bring joy to their service, treat every person with dignity, act with courage and good judgment, and work as one team across the system. People who thrive here believe a library is more than a place to find information; it is a place where a community comes to know itself.

Important Note:

The City Library is currently engaged in strategic planning implementation. This position may evolve in the future based on organizational needs and strategic priorities.

About the Position

Library Associates, Floating keep our doors open and our service consistent across the system. This is a part-time, associate-level public service role with no fixed home branch. You’ll staff public service desks wherever they are needed, varying by day or week, based on assignments from the Staffing Manager.

Few roles give you this kind of view. In a single week you might help a teenager find her next graphic novel at Glendale, walk someone through an online job application at Main, and suggest a book club pick at Sprague. Over time you'll come to know the whole system: its neighborhoods, its collections, its teams, and the different ways each library serves its community. If you’re building a career in public libraries, that breadth is hard to get any other way.

You’ll also help hold the system together. Floating Associates carry good ideas, practical fixes, and relationships from branch to branch, so nine libraries can work as one.

Applicants must be available to work one of the following schedule combinations (18 hrs per week):

Option 1:

Monday, 4:00 PM–8:00 PM; Friday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM; Saturday, 1:00 PM–6:00 PM.

Option 2:

Tuesday, 4:00 PM–8:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM; Sunday, 11:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Option 3:

Wednesday, 4:00 PM–8:00 PM; Thursday, 4:00 PM–8:00 PM; Friday, 1:00 PM–5:00 PM; Sunday, 11:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Strategic Plan Alignment

This role directly advances the Salt Lake City Public Library Strategic Plan 2026–2034 across four key priorities. Ensuring consistent, reliable coverage at every branch supports Creating Belonging Through Access. Delivering reference, readers’ advisory, and assistance finding materials advances Reading and Literacy for All. Fostering welcoming environments and connecting community members across Salt Lake City’s neighborhoods furthers Strengthening Civic Life. Finally, operating within a flexible, systemwide staffing model directly supports Building Capacity and Sustaining Impact

This role is a strong fit if you:

Thrive on variety and would rather not have the same day twice;
Want to understand how an entire library system works, not just one building; and
Enjoy serving people across the full range of Salt Lake City’s neighborhoods.

Serves a diverse population.
Working relationships. Builds positive working relationships with staff, patrons, and volunteers at every location. Accepts assignments from the Staffing Manager and the staff in charge at each location in a professional and timely manner.
