Senior Process Engineer – Modular Cooling Units (MCU)
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our Data Center Infrastructure team and lead process design activities for next-generation Modular Cooling Units (MCUs). In this role, you will be responsible for developing Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment specifications, and control philosophies that form the foundation of product development.
As a technical leader, you will work closely with mechanical, piping, controls, electrical, and project engineering teams to define process requirements, establish system architecture, and ensure designs meet performance, safety, reliability, and manufacturability objectives. This position plays a critical role in transforming concepts into engineered products for large-scale data center cooling applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and ownership of Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for modular cooling systems.
- Define process design requirements, operating philosophies, control narratives, and instrumentation strategies.
- Perform process calculations including fluid flow, heat transfer, pressure drop, pump sizing, valve sizing, and equipment selection.
- Develop equipment specifications, datasheets, process descriptions, and design documentation.
- Collaborate with piping, mechanical, structural, controls, and electrical engineers throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Support design reviews, HAZOPs, risk assessments, and technical reviews.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, codes, and engineering best practices.
- Analyze process performance and troubleshoot design issues during development, testing, and commissioning.
- Support prototype development, factory testing, and field deployment activities.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
- Drive continuous improvement of design standards, engineering tools, and development processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in process engineering, system design, or product development.
- Strong experience developing and reviewing P&IDs for industrial process systems.
- Experience with pumps, heat exchangers, piping systems, valves, instrumentation, and process equipment.
- Strong understanding of process controls, instrumentation, and control philosophies.
- Experience performing hydraulic and process calculations.
- Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and technical leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing modular process systems, skid-mounted equipment, packaged systems, or offshore modules.
- Experience with cooling water, chilled water, thermal management, or HVAC-related process systems.
- Familiarity with data center cooling infrastructure.
- Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and field operations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
- Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME, API, ISA, and applicable process safety practices.
What Success Looks Like
- Establishes the process architecture and P&IDs that serve as the blueprint for product development.
- Partners effectively across engineering disciplines to deliver complete system designs.
- Identifies technical risks early and develops practical engineering solutions.
- Provides technical leadership throughout the design, testing, and deployment phases of MCU development.
