Our global, diverse team would be happy to support you and challenge you in new ways. As a key member of our Power Systems Engineering team, you will design, test, and commission robust protection and control schemes for medium and high voltage substations. You will play a vital role in ensuring grid reliability, driving infrastructure innovation, and serving as a primary technical interface for our customers, delivering advanced energy distribution systems and solutions nationwide

This hybrid Power Systems Protection Engineer position is based at our Wendell, NC headquarters for Siemens Electrification & Automation. Local candidates are encouraged to apply. Located in the heart of the Research Triangle about 20 minutes east of Raleigh, Wendell offers top-rated schools, a mild four-season climate, easy access to mountains and coast, and a cost of living that allows our compensation to go further.

You’ll make a difference by:

  • Designing, configuring, and testing protective relay systems, ensuring high reliability and integrity of protection and control schemes for medium and high voltage substations.
  • Developing and implementing protection and control schemes that align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer-specific needs.
  • Authoring and refining Control Logic Diagrams, Signal Lists, and Functional Design Specifications documents during project design phases.
  • Preparing and executing Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and comprehensive testing environments for customer projects.
  • Delivering expert technical support across the full project lifecycle - from initial design and implementation to field troubleshooting and commissioning.

You’ll win us over by having the following qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience with power protection engineering for electrical substations
  • Experience with AC/DC schematics, three-line, and one-line diagram analysis for medium and high voltage systems.
  • Experience configuring and utilizing major industry relay and automation hardware (e.g., Siemens Siprotec 5, GE, SEL, ABB) along with associated engineering software.
  • Prior experience implementing common substation communication protocols (such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 103/104, Profinet, Profibus).
  • Experience executing Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning scripts for protection and control systems.
  • Able and willing to travel; 50% to 75% nationwide travel is expected depending on project assignments and customer requirements.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a continual and permanent basis without company sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced hands-on experience in designing, configuring, and troubleshooting protection relay applications across low, medium, and high voltage substations.
  • Specialized proficiency with Siemens digital protection and control relays, particularly the Siprotec 5 product family.
  • Advanced expertise with Siemens DIGSI 5 engineering software for configuration and diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with alternative industry-standard relay configuration tools such as SEL AcSELerator, SEL Architect, Hitachi PCM600, MiCOM, or GE EnerVista UR.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical customer interfaces and resolving complex field integration challenges during commissioning.
