Original job description

A couple of general things here that are very important:

What we’re looking for in every hire at Shift:

Someone innately curious, smart, pragmatic, and driven to succeed.
Someone who always finds a solution to a problem, regardless of past experiences with it or skill-level.
Someone who truly resonates with the mission to fix healthcare and gets excited by working on difficult and complex problems.

What is Shift Technologies? We’re an AI company that’s rethinking healthcare infrastructure, and building it from the ground up. We believe that healthcare is fundamentally broken, and past the point of saving. So we’re solution engineering products we think will fix broken workflows, automate manual processes for clinicians, and ultimately bring huge impact on patient care. What product are you guys working on currently? ShiftOS + Holly; an AI-healthcare administrator handling scheduling, licensure tracking and compliance, and workforce management tasks for healthcare employers. What other products have you guys created? We first built shiftrx.io, it’s a PRN (per-needed / per-diem / locum, whatever you want to call it) staffing marketplace. We were the first to bring the gig-work uber approach to pharmacy, and implemented AI throughout. We’re super proud of it, and it was really hard. Ultimately, fixing healthcare is not a one solution for all so we won’t create just one solution. But we grew it to be used by 1K+ pharmacies across the US, and 10K+ pharmacists and technicians to find gig-work and pick-up shifts. It’s still running under the company and is a profitable business line. It also helped us a lot with the foundation to build Holly + ShiftOS but, we’ll tell you more about that later. What’s the future look like if I join Shift? If you’re incredible talent, you belong here, working on one of the hardest and most important problems of our lifetime. Fixing US healthcare. Our founders, and founding team are dedicated to this mission above all else so if this sounds like you, you’d probably be a pretty great fit. We hope that our organization creates future founders much like Palantir, Stripe, etc. and that our eng org is regarded as an incredible one. This being said, being early at a foundational and category defining company means you have the ability to learn a LOT, make mistakes, take ownership, grow as an individual, and know that the work you’re doing really matters. Everything we do here has a deeper purpose, so you can feel pretty good about what you’re working on. We also believe heavily in promoting within, and people leading teams of jobs they’ve done themselves. If you’re looking for a lot of autonomy, the ability to push yourself to accomplish things that you didn’t know you were capable of doing, and working really hard with other smart people - this is the place to be. And ultimately, we’re hoping, that your future (or existing) kids, parents, spouses, and YOU will be able to reap the benefits of having made a huge positive impact on healthcare in the US. We’re all patients at the end of the day. You’re going to be expected to wear a lot of hats, and figure a lot of shit out. If you’re looking for work-life balance, this isn’t the place to be. But if you want to join something incredible and look back and said ‘wow I worked on that’, then you’ll want to be here. This Role We’re hiring a Founding Engineer to build, ship, and own core parts of ShiftOS. You’ll be an essential founding engineer at the company, working directly with the CEO and CPO, and your code will power the first wave of enterprise deployments. This is a career-defining founding seat. And we ideate, build, and ship with speed. If you're down to take ownership and get excited by solving really hard problems, quickly, you'll love it here. What You'll Do

Ship code daily across the stack: React/Next.js, TypeScript, Python, AWS.
Build distributed backend services and a performant, maintainable frontend.
Design, deploy, and evolve our cloud infrastructure (AWS, Terraform, CI/CD).
Integrate AI/optimization systems into real workflows (scheduling, credentialing, payroll).
Translate customer requirements into simple, scalable solutions.
Lay the groundwork for observability, testability, and developer velocity.

Who you are and what you bring to the table

You’re a full-stack builder who ships fast and clean. You’ve put real users on React/Next.js + TypeScript frontends and Python backends, and you’re comfy spelunking across the stack.
You’ve got opinions (earned ones) on AWS, IaC (Terraform), containers, Postgres, queues, caches, CI/CD - then you validate those opinions with metrics.
You’ve shipped AI-native features (LLMs, retrieval, optimization) or you’ve been grinding on them nights/weekends and can show receipts. You care about evaluation, guardrails, and latency, not just vibes.
You think in systems: distributed correctness, observability, resiliency, cost. You build primitives that compound velocity for the whole team.
You’re allergic to over-engineering and legacy theater. Simple beats clever; boring tech that scales beats shiny tech that flakes.
You’re gritty and competitive (yes, actually). You like hard problems, short loops, and owning outcomes end-to-end.
You’re curious and coachable, but not passive. You seek context from customers, PM, GTM, and let that shape the roadmap you execute.
You’re a low-ego teammate who elevates code reviews, docs, and on-call without drama. Humble when learning, loud when it protects reliability or security.
Bonus XP: OR-Tools/constraint solvers; workforce/scheduling or healthcare data models; monorepo tooling (pnpm/Turborepo); SOC-2 pragmatism.
