Original job description
As Design Integration Manager, you’re the link between what’s drawn and what gets built. You’ll work with architects, engineers, consultants, clients, and our construction teams to turn design intent into buildable, on-budget plans, from the first proposal through closeout.
You’ll keep design on schedule, catch conflicts before they reach the field, and guide teams through every phase from pre-award to construction. If you like solving problems where design meets construction, this is your seat at the table.
This position can be based out of one of our Greensboro, NC, Charlotte, NC or Raleigh, NC regional offices.
What You’ll Do
- Recommend designers, consultants, design-build trade partners, and suppliers for strategic pursuits, and negotiate teaming agreements alongside the EVP and/or Regional RVP/SVP.
- Help shape proposal responses, including the scope of design services, preliminary design and preconstruction schedules, and conceptual budgets.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other designers to confirm design aligns with construction feasibility, regulations, and the proposal submitted to the client.
- Review design documents for accuracy and completeness, and prepare coordination and constructability reviews to surface conflicts before construction.
- Set goals and a communication plan for design meetings, facilitate coordination across teams, and document commitments for accountability and follow-up.
- Manage the design schedule against deliverable milestones, and align design timelines with construction schedules and procurement.
- Monitor the preconstruction and design budget against actual costs, and keep a design changes log that tracks associated costs for the client and project team.
- Partner with Preconstruction Services to keep design aligned with project budget.
- Work with the VP of Quality / Schedule to maintain design standards through construction, and visit sites when requested to verify work matches the approved design.
- Facilitate meetings with AHJs on permit, inspection, and code compliance, and document key design changes and communications during construction.
- Mediate and resolve design questions and concerns between client and designers.
- Maintain a project risk register, develop proactive strategies to mitigate risks, and document the basis of design, reconciling it against the client’s program and scope.
- Prepare, manage, and oversee design and design-assist agreements with architects, engineers, consultants, and trade partners, and document client approval of final design documents.
- Support closeout documentation on select projects.
- Stay current on design and construction technology, and put innovative tools to work to improve how we integrate design.
- Build a supportive, inclusive team culture.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 8-10 years of broad experience in the design and/or construction industry, including significant responsibility in design management, project management, or field operations, with a sound understanding of both the design and construction process.
- Proven experience in design coordination within the commercial design and construction industry.
- Working knowledge of virtual design and construction technologies, including BIM software, clash detection, visualization, and collaboration platforms (e.g., Autodesk Suite including Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360, and 3ds Max; Revizto; SketchUp).
- Strong knowledge of building codes, regulations, and construction processes.
- Proficiency in project management tools and software.
- Experience with Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, Construction Manager at Risk, and Integrated Project Delivery, and with applying the design process to each.
- Experience developing and managing CPM schedules.
- A track record of building and managing teams, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop team members.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to resolve design and construction issues across the project lifecycle.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once.
- A collaborative approach that fosters a positive, inclusive team environment.
