The Critical Facility Engineer III (Shift Lead) is a senior facilities-focused leadership role responsible for the operational integrity, commissioning, and regulatory compliance of the electrical power, mechanical, monitoring, and control systems, as well as the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective manner for highly available, concurrently maintainable, fault-tolerant mission-critical data center environments. The CFE III ensures that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency and the highest levels of reliability to maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This encompasses planned preventive and predictive maintenance, daily corrective work, and front-line leadership during emergency responses and complex hands-on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting. Reporting to the Site Manager, the CFE III serves as the on-shift operational commander and primary technical lead for their assigned 12-hour watch, executing the maintenance, switching, and emergency response standards established by the Critical Facility Lead Engineer - directly supervising onsite Multi-Skilled Operators (MSOs) and junior CFEs, managing third-party vendors, and interfacing across internal departments, executives, and clients. Critical equipment under the CFE III’s purview includes, but is not limited to, standby diesel generators, related fuel systems, medium- and low-voltage electrical switchgear, static and rotary UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, thermal management systems, chemical/water treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
Key Responsibilities
- Uncompromising Safety Leadership: Place SAFETY at the top of anything and everything done - without fail. Remain consistently focused on safety and enforce strict compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash protection (NFPA 70E), OSHA, and local regulatory standards across all site personnel and contractors.
- Subject Matter Expertise & Technical Authority: Provide applied electrical, mechanical, integrated control, and water chemistry technical expertise for the entire data center.
- Team Leadership: Mentor and supervise shift personnel in all aspects of day-to-day operations and maintenance of electrical and mechanical critical facility equipment.
- System Operations & Advanced Troubleshooting: Operate, monitor, maintain, and lead the response to abnormal conditions of facility systems; serve as the front-line technical lead for complex hands-on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, rapid response, investigation, and management of indoor emergency situations.
- Maintenance Planning & Execution: Work with the Site Manager and stakeholders to develop, track, and complete preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for critical maintenance and system commissioning; complete planned and ad-hoc maintenance assignments requiring multi-trade engineering direction.
- Commissioning & Phased Construction: Directly interface with the management team, general contractors, and engineering consultants for all phased data center construction commissioning, including the integration and testing (IST) of new systems while maintaining existing critical systems online without impact.
- Contractor & Vendor Management: Directly manage contractors and consultants for daily operations and critical maintenance (including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, and chiller maintenance); monitor contractor performance, note deficiencies, and recommend changes as necessary.
- Efficiency & Continuous Improvement: Ensure the data center operates at maximum operational efficiency by analyzing existing operating conditions, recommending new technologies, and driving overall efficiency and cost reduction.
- Inspections & CMMS Governance: Conduct periodic inspections of building systems (HVAC, electrical distribution, mechanical equipment rooms/enclosures) to ensure clean, functional, and safe conditions. Maintain complete ownership over creating, closing, and tracking Work Requests (WR) and Work Orders (WO), verifying technical accuracy and work completion.
- Stakeholder & Executive Interface: Interact effectively across all internal departments, including executive leadership, clients, and vendors, and perform other related duties as assigned by management.
- Shift Requirement: 24x7x365 Shift Operations - Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holiday
Minimum Qualifications
