About Us:

Founded in 1975, Salas O’Brien is an employee-owned engineering and professional services firm focused on achieving impact for our clients, our team, and the world. We know that tomorrow’s requirements are today’s opportunities, and we are here to design lasting solutions for pressing challenges.

We work across a variety of industries providing integrated engineering and consulting services. Our specialized experience includes design for data centers, healthcare, science and technology, high-rise buildings, clean energy, education, and other building types as well as structural and building sciences, infrastructure asset management, advanced robotics, and more.

Our technical expertise is paired with an exceptional team of business development, human resources, finance and accounting, information technology, and marketing professionals, all of whom play a key role in bringing our commitments to life every day.

Job Summary:

The Senior MEP Engineer - Mechanical Focus is responsible for the technical execution of projects ranging in scope and scale. This role independently designs and coordinates mechanical systems, produces clear calculations and construction documents, directs modeling and drafting activities, and helps ensure the final deliverable is coordinated, constructible, code-compliant, and aligned with client goals.

Primary Responsibilities

Prepare mechanical calculations and construction documents that meet quality standards

Design HVAC, plumbing, and related mechanical systems within areas of technical proficiency.
Perform load calculations, equipment selection, system sizing, energy analysis, and code review.
Develop system schematics, sequences, schedules, specifications, and unique details.
Provide modeling and drafting direction and coordinate BIM deliverables.
Quality-check own work and provide high-level options to the Technical Lead when direction is required.

Develop and execute sprint plan activities

Create and communicate the plan of approach to the Project Manager.
Define deliverable tasks, dependencies, and estimated hours.
Prioritize high-value, low-risk activities that keep the project moving.
Commit to and execute the plan; reconcile progress with the project team as needed.
Communicate early and often when roadblocks, scope changes, or schedule risks are identified.

Manage construction administration activities and report to the Technical Lead

Maintain and update the construction administration log.
Draft responses to RFIs for Technical Lead approval.
Review mechanical submittals and shop drawings and present recommendations to the Technical Lead.
Evaluate substitutions, field conditions, and coordination conflicts; elevate scope-creep concerns.
Perform site visits, document observations, and support punch-list and closeout activities.

Independently communicate and manage client and consultant coordination

Communicate independently through client meetings, calls, and email exchanges.
Coordinate mechanical design with architectural, structural, electrical, civil, and specialty disciplines.
Proactively identify coordination issues and offer practical solutions.
Advise clients early on system selection, lifecycle considerations, constructability, energy performance, and tradeoffs.
Communicate decisions, action items, and updates to the project team.

Participate in and execute continuous-improvement activities

Seek out and participate in continuing education and discipline-specific development.
Contribute to standards, details, specifications, calculation tools, and best practices.
Support mentoring and technical development of engineers and BIM/modeling staff.
Expand proficiency across system types, markets, delivery methods, and project scales.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline required.
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Typically 8+ years of progressive mechanical building-systems design experience, including independent project execution and construction administration.
Demonstrated experience developing coordinated construction documents and communicating directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Revit and discipline-specific calculation, energy-modeling, and specification tools.
Experience with multiple project types and delivery methods.
Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, plumbing, energy, fire/life-safety, and accessibility codes and standards.
Experience mentoring technical staff and improving design standards or workflows.

Benefits:

Gain invaluable industry experience and practical engineering skills.
Work with a diverse team of professionals, fostering network opportunities.
Access to mentorship and guidance from experienced engineers.
Competitive compensation package.

Location: Remote

Travel: Yes 10-15%

Compensation: $99,750 $115,500
