Interested in problem-solving, data analytics, risk management, or business operations? The Internal Audit Internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in one of the most important functions within a financial institution. You'll work alongside experienced audit professionals, learn how organizations identify and manage risk, and gain exposure to a wide variety of banking operations. Along the way, you'll strengthen the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills that employers value across industries. Whether you're interested in accounting, finance, business, data analytics, consulting, compliance, or risk management, this internship provides meaningful experience that can help launch your career. Primary Objective The Internal Audit Intern will support the Internal Audit department in evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management practices, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Particular emphasis will be placed on data analytics and audit testing, providing opportunities to work with information that helps drive business decisions and assess risk. As an Internal Audit Intern, you'll gain a broad view of how a bank operates while learning how organizations identify risks, evaluate controls, and improve processes. You'll work with team members across the bank, contribute to real audit projects, and gain practical experience in one of the most dynamic and impactful areas of the business. In addition to day-to-day responsibilities, interns will participate in a collaborative summer intern project, working alongside fellow interns to address a meaningful business challenge, develop recommendations, and present their findings to leaders at the conclusion of the program. This internship is designed to help you learn, grow, and build a strong foundation for future career success. By the end of the summer, you'll have gained valuable business experience, developed professional skills, and expanded your network while working with professionals who are invested in your development.

Responsibilities

The Internal Audit Intern will:

Perform control testing to assess compliance with bank policies, procedures, and regulations.
Review supporting documentation and evidence to validate audit conclusions.
Participate in walkthroughs and discussions with business unit personnel.
Prepare and maintain audit workpapers in accordance with internal audit methodology and professional standards.
Support the drafting of audit observations and recommendations.
Conduct research on regulatory requirements, industry practices, and emerging risks.
Support the Data Analytics & Automation Manager in the preparation of audit trail documentation for analytic testing.
Support the Quality Assurance Manager in the execution of the Internal Audit team's quality assurance and improvement program.
Participate in a collaborative summer intern project, partnering with peers to develop solutions, strengthen presentation skills, and deliver recommendations to business leaders.
Provide general administrative and logistical support to the Internal Audit team.

What You'll Learn

By the end of the internship, you'll have gained exposure to:

Risk management and internal control practices within the banking industry.
Regulatory requirements applicable to banks, including oversight from agencies such as the FDIC, OCC, Federal Reserve, and CFPB.
Audit methodology, testing techniques, and reporting practices.
Data analytics applications used to support audit testing and business insights.
How organizations identify risks, evaluate controls, and drive continuous improvement.
Professional skills including analytical thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, business communication, and project management.
Cross-functional collaboration through interactions with multiple business units and participation in summer intern projects.

What You'll Gain

Throughout the summer, you'll have the opportunity to:

Work on meaningful projects that contribute to the department's objectives.
Gain exposure to a wide range of banking functions and business operations.
Learn directly from experienced audit, risk, and compliance professionals.
Strengthen your analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.
Develop confidence presenting ideas, findings, and recommendations.
Build relationships with leaders, mentors, and fellow interns across the organization.
Gain experience that can help prepare you for careers in accounting, finance, consulting, data analytics, risk management, compliance, internal audit, and other business-related fields.
Add real-world project experience to your resume and develop skills that will support long-term career success.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Data Analytics, or a related field.
Preferably having completed a minimum of two full years of undergraduate coursework (rising junior status preferred).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
Familiarity with data analytics tools such as Power BI, Alteryx, or SQL is preferred.
Demonstrated interest in banking, risk management, compliance, auditing, or data analytics.

Who Should Apply? This internship is ideal for students who are naturally curious, enjoy solving problems, like working with data, and want to understand how businesses manage risk and make informed decisions. If you're eager to learn, take on new challenges, and gain hands-on experience that will help set you apart after graduation, we'd love to have you join our team this summer.
