Original job description

We are looking for a Trade Compliance Attorney to support our client on a contract basis. This role will advise business stakeholders on complex customs and international trade matters while helping build a more proactive and efficient compliance approach. The ideal candidate can turn evolving regulatory requirements into practical business guidance and identify opportunities to reduce risk, improve processes, and support informed operational decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise cross-functional teams on daily and long-range customs and trade compliance issues affecting retail operations.
  • Interpret import and export requirements, including product classification, customs valuation, and country-of-origin considerations.
  • Counsel business leaders on duty mitigation strategies, duty suspension programs, and the use of applicable free trade agreement benefits.
  • Assess potential exposure related to anti-dumping and countervailing duties, including scope reviews for products that have been flagged.
  • Track U.S. and foreign trade regulations and explain new or changing rules in clear, practical terms for internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and refine customs compliance procedures that strengthen controls and support a more strategic operating model.
  • Provide timely legal guidance in response to internal questions, clearly outlining risks, options, and recommended actions.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline trade compliance practices and improve cost efficiency through product, sourcing, or process-related recommendations.
  • Juris Doctor degree and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on customs law, import/export compliance, and international trade regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of tariff classification, customs valuation, rules of origin, and free trade agreement analysis.
  • Experience evaluating anti-dumping and countervailing duty matters, including product scope assessments.
  • Ability to translate complex legal and regulatory issues into concise, business-focused guidance.
  • Proven skill in partnering with business teams to improve compliance processes and support strategic decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to respond quickly to time-sensitive requests.
