Original job description
Robert Half is seeking an Interoperability Engineer to support a healthcare client based in Seattle, WA. This is a senior, hands-on role on a small team. You will design and validate the data flows, write the specifications partners build against, and work directly with partner engineers to get them live. Apply today!
Location: 100% Remote Duration: Through September 2027 – possible for extension/conversion Schedule: Monday – Friday (40 hours, must align with the team and overlap hours during 9-3PM PST)
Job Responsibilities:
Standards and data design
- Own the mapping and conversion of inbound C-CDA/CCD documents into FHIR R4 resources in Azure Health Data Services, including conversion templates and handling of data that does not map cleanly.
- Define the FHIR profiles, validation rules, and implementation guidance for trading partners posting FHIR bundles to us.
- Ensure the data we ingest and expose conforms to USCDI v3 and US Core, and maintain the testing and evidence needed to demonstrate conformance Washington state IT security standards.
- Guide terminology handling across LOINC, SNOMED CT, RxNorm, ICD-10-CM, and CVX. Patient identity and data quality
- Own the data flow for how incoming records are matched and linked through our master patient index before landing in the FHIR service.
- Partner with our data engineer to monitor data quality, identify partner-specific issues, and drive fixes at the source. APIs for participants and payers
- Own the design for the FHIR APIs we expose to participants and payers, including search behavior, authorization scopes, and documentation. Partner onboarding and migration
- Lead technical onboarding for trading partners: specifications, connectivity and conformance testing, troubleshooting, and go-live. Building and operating with the team
- Work with our developers on Azure-based ingestion pipelines, giving them precise requirements for what correct output looks like.
- Work with our operations engineering team on monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and incident response for clinical data flows.
- Apply strong privacy and security practices to every flow that touches protected health information.
- 10+ years of healthcare integration or interoperability work at an HIE, health system, payer, EHR vendor, or health IT company.
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of C-CDA: document templates, sections, entries, and the real-world variation between EHR implementations.
- Hands-on FHIR R4 experience, including US Core profiles, implementation guides, bundle structure, and validation.
- Working knowledge of USCDI and how its data classes map to C-CDA and FHIR.
- Experience with clinical terminologies (LOINC, SNOMED CT, RxNorm, ICD-10-CM).
- A track record of onboarding external trading partners: writing specifications, testing with partner engineers, and resolving data issues across organizations.
- Clear, persuasive communication with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders, including making the case for change to partners who are comfortable with the status quo.
- Comfort reading and writing code in at least one language (such as C#, Java, or Python), and fluency with JSON and XML.
- Understanding of patient matching and master patient index concepts.
- Experience handling PHI under HIPAA and a security-minded approach to data flows.
