Original job description
We’re seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead technical strategy and execution across a product domain or platform area spanning multiple teams. In this role, you will own outcomes end-to-end by defining success metrics, shaping the roadmap, and driving measurable improvements over time.
You will set the architectural direction for scalable APIs, backend services, data platforms, and event-driven systems that operate across team boundaries. You’ll also lead the most complex work related to performance, scalability, and reliability. As a senior technical leader, you will raise the engineering bar across the organization by establishing standards, creating reusable platforms and patterns, improving documentation practices, simplifying systems, and reducing technical debt. You’ll be responsible for making and communicating high-impact technical decisions across architecture, security, performance, cost, and scalability. This includes identifying risks early and designing safeguards before they become incidents. This role requires close partnership with Product, Design, Machine Learning, Client Success, and engineering leadership to shape strategy, turn ambiguous business goals into clear multi-quarter technical plans, and align teams on execution. You will also help define how the organization adopts AI-assisted and agentic development practices by establishing guardrails for verification, security, and human accountability in production decisions, while measuring the real impact these tools create. In addition, you will mentor senior engineers, influence technical direction across the organization, lead architecture reviews, and remain hands-on with the highest-impact technical work.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience building, scaling, and operating production systems, with a proven track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams
- Deep expertise in backend, platform, distributed systems, or full-stack product engineering, with the ability to design systems that scale with both product and organizational growth
- Strong programming skills in Python, Java, TypeScript, Kotlin, or a comparable modern language, with the ability to work effectively in Python-based environments and guide language and framework choices
- Significant experience architecting and operating production APIs, services, data platforms, distributed workflows, and event-driven architectures at enterprise scale
- Experience leading responses to complex production incidents
- Strong fluency with AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows, including experience helping teams adopt them safely and effectively
- Excellent product sense and technical judgment, with experience shaping technical strategy, influencing product roadmaps, and presenting decisions to senior stakeholders
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical strategy documents and align teams around decisions and tradeoffs
Nice to Have
- Experience in enterprise software or other complex, workflow-heavy environments
- Experience working in highly regulated, data-sensitive, or compliance-focused domains
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
- Experience with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Exposure to AI-enabled product capabilities such as automation, retrieval-based systems, evaluation tooling, structured outputs, or human review workflows
