Original job description
We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support day-to-day accounting activities and help maintain accurate financial records for a region of companies in the construction/service industry. This role contributes to month-end close, account analysis, payroll-related accounting, and tax support while working closely with operational and finance partners. The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in general accounting, strong organizational skills, and the ability to improve processes in a fast-paced environment. This position is fully remote, however, needs to be based in the Kansas area.
Responsibilities:
- Manage essential accounting activities across the daily and monthly close process, including cash activity, payables, payroll entries, and inventory-related transactions.
- Complete and review reconciliations for bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts to confirm accuracy and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Prepare, post, and track journal entries related to payroll, inventory activity, accruals, and intercompany transactions in accordance with closing timelines.
- Maintain organized supporting schedules and workpapers so reconciliations and close documentation are complete, accurate, and ready for audit review.
- Partner with HR and site leadership to validate payroll data, confirm proper general ledger coding, and record compensation-related accruals and liabilities.
- Assist with sales and use tax reconciliations and filing support by coordinating with finance and tax teams on periodic compliance activities.
- Use accounting and business systems such as Acumatica, Paylocity, Avalara, DataRails, Global PayEx, and LeaseQuery to strengthen reporting accuracy and improve efficiency.
- Document standard procedures and recommend workflow enhancements that reduce manual effort and support more timely financial close deliverables.
- Collaborate with accounting, FP&A, and operations stakeholders to provide reporting, analysis, and financial information that supports informed business decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- At least 1 year of accounting experience in general ledger, financial operations, or a similar accounting environment.
- Working knowledge of month-end close activities, journal entries, reconciliations, and general accounting principles.
- Experience supporting payroll accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, or sales tax processes is strongly preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working within enterprise accounting or ERP systems.
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional and distributed teams.
- Progress toward certification or experience in manufacturing, construction, service, audit, or comparable industries is a plus.
