Original job description

We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join a financial research organization on a Long-term Contract basis, providing coverage during an extended leave while partnering with an established accounting team. This role is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, and will support core accounting operations across domestic and international entities in a remote work environment. The ideal candidate can step into recurring processes quickly, contribute to month-end activities with minimal ramp-up time, and collaborate effectively with finance partners in multiple countries.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly close activities by preparing supporting schedules, analyzing account fluctuations, and helping maintain accurate financial reporting.
  • Manage intercompany billing processes between the U.S. business and international affiliates in accordance with established allocation and transfer pricing practices.
  • Reconcile cash accounts and document fund movements across related entities to ensure balances are complete and properly recorded.
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations for key accounts such as prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, and deferred revenue, resolving discrepancies on a timely basis.
  • Prepare and record journal entries in the general ledger while maintaining compliance with U.S. GAAP and internal accounting standards.
  • Assemble monthly sales tax information and supporting documentation for submission to external tax advisors or service providers.
  • Provide requested schedules, reconciliations, and other documentation to support external audit activities.
  • Generate ad hoc financial reports and analysis to assist the finance team with operational and reporting needs.
  • Apply established accounting policies, internal controls, and standard procedures consistently across recurring responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience using NetSuite in an accounting environment that requires strong attention to detail.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 2 to 4 years of accounting experience in a corporate or public accounting setting.
  • Practical knowledge of U.S. GAAP, general ledger activity, and month-end close processes.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to organize, analyze, and reconcile financial data.
  • High level of accuracy and organization with the ability to manage recurring deadlines effectively.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and comfort collaborating with colleagues across different time zones.
  • Experience with intercompany accounting, multi-entity environments, or audit support is preferred.
