Original job description
We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to join a lean finance team in Troy, New York. This Long-term Contract position will play a key role in maintaining daily accounting operations, supporting leadership during a period of transition, and ensuring accurate financial reporting across multiple funding sources. The person in this role will contribute to timely month-end close activities, strengthen grant-related financial processes, and help keep documentation organized for audits and compliance reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Manage general ledger activity, including preparing journal entries, reviewing balances, and completing account and bank reconciliations.
- Support monthly and year-end close efforts by maintaining accurate records and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Oversee accounts payable workflows, review voucher packages and posting batches, and provide day-to-day guidance to support staff involved in fiscal processing.
- Prepare financial reports for grant-funded programs and produce recurring monthly reporting for federal and state-funded initiatives.
- Coordinate reimbursement requests and assemble supporting documentation to help ensure grant drawdowns are submitted on schedule.
- Review cost allocation methods and maintain compliance-focused records aligned with applicable funding regulations and documentation standards.
- Reconcile grant revenue, receivables, and related balances in the absence of a dedicated accounts receivable function.
- Develop budget-to-actual reporting and variance analysis to support financial oversight and decision-making.
- Assemble audit schedules, tax reporting support files, and other workpapers needed for external reporting requirements.
- Assist with payroll-related reconciliations and pension accounting activities as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, ideally within nonprofit, fund-based, or government-funded environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of general ledger accounting, month-end close, journal entries, and reconciliations.
- Experience preparing grant financial reporting, reimbursement documentation, and related compliance support.
- Familiarity with fund accounting principles, including revenue tracking across restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
- Working understanding of Uniform Guidance and cost allocation practices for grant-funded organizations.
- Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to use pivot tables, lookup functions, and detailed reconciliation worksheets.
- Experience supporting external audits and working with accounting systems such as FUND E-Z.
