Original job description
We are looking for an experienced Software Architect to provide deep technical leadership for a Db2 environment that supports a transportation management platform in Burlingame, California. This Long-term Contract position focuses on evaluating the current database and infrastructure landscape, strengthening performance and reliability, and recommending practical improvements that support critical business operations. The role also partners with technical stakeholders to solve complex platform issues, document findings, and guide modernization efforts while maintaining application stability.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate the existing Db2 platform, operating model, and supporting architecture to uncover performance gaps, capacity concerns, security risks, and reliability issues.
- Analyze workload behavior across transactional processes and reporting activity, using execution plans, indexing strategy, locking patterns, memory settings, logging, and storage usage to recommend measurable improvements.
- Review custom SQL and related application workflows, then refine inefficient queries or propose alternative functional approaches when database changes alone are not the best solution.
- Resolve production-facing database and platform problems, including slowdowns, failed scheduled processing, storage limitations, replication concerns, backup or recovery issues, and interruptions to availability.
- Improve the Windows-based environment currently supporting Db2 by assessing server configuration, memory utilization, disk and file system performance, network settings, service permissions, and security controls.
- Build and enhance automation for recurring operational checks, configuration validation, backup confirmation, and ongoing monitoring using PowerShell or similar scripting tools.
- Support the migration of a large production Db2 database from Windows to Linux by defining readiness criteria, dependency reviews, data movement strategy, testing plans, cutover activities, rollback steps, and post-go-live stabilization.
- Configure and tune Linux infrastructure for Db2, including storage mounts, permissions, resource thresholds, networking, service management, and monitoring integration.
- Work closely with vendor support and engineering teams to investigate open cases, accelerate issue resolution, and validate platform changes through benchmarking and documented runbooks.
- Strong hands-on experience architecting, administering, and optimizing IBM Db2 environments that support high-volume business applications.
- Proven ability to diagnose database performance issues using SQL analysis, execution plans, indexing methods, locking behavior, and resource utilization metrics.
- Experience supporting production platforms across Windows and Linux server environments, including storage, networking, security, and system configuration.
- Demonstrated background in planning and executing database migration initiatives with attention to testing, rollback preparation, continuity, and post-migration validation.
- Proficiency in scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell to streamline health checks, validation routines, and operational support tasks.
- Working knowledge of backup, recovery, monitoring, high availability, and disaster recovery practices for enterprise database systems.
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation, risk assessments, and procedural guidance for infrastructure, database, and support teams.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders, engineering teams, and external support partners.
