Original job description
We are looking for an experienced Senior Cost Accountant with a CPA to support a growing manufacturing and supply organization in Denton, Texas. This Long-term Contract position will lead the development and ongoing management of a scalable job costing structure that supports both manufactured products and material pass-through programs. The role will convert operational and transactional data into dependable cost insights, accurate inventory valuation, and clear margin reporting for leadership. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on experience in project job costing within complex, high-growth environments. Must be onsite in Denton 5 days a week.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage a comprehensive job costing framework that supports both manufacturing activity and pass-through business lines across multiple divisions.
- Create and maintain standard costing elements, including material, labor, routing, and overhead assumptions, while performing regular reviews and annual updates.
- Establish clear costing policies, process documentation, and internal controls to ensure consistency and accuracy as transaction volume increases.
- Partner with engineering and operations teams to cost new or custom products and verify the accuracy of bills of materials and production routings.
- Oversee inventory accounting by monitoring valuation, reconciling subledger activity to the general ledger, and reviewing perpetual inventory accuracy.
- Support cycle counts and physical inventory programs, investigate discrepancies, and record appropriate adjustments with attention to root-cause analysis.
- Track excess, slow-moving, and obsolete inventory trends and recommend reserve levels based on business conditions and inventory risk.
- Analyze manufacturing and project cost variances, including material usage, labor performance, purchasing impacts, and overhead absorption, then communicate findings to business partners.
- Prepare margin reporting by division, product line, customer, and job while distinguishing profitability from manufactured output versus pass-through activity.
- Collaborate with operations and procurement leaders to turn cost trends and variance findings into practical corrective actions, including any relevant ERP costing process improvements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- At least 7 years of experience in cost accounting, with strong exposure to manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated success building job costing models from the ground up rather than only maintaining existing structures.
- Hands-on experience with project-based cost tracking, cost-to-complete analysis, and job-level profitability reporting.
- Strong knowledge of standard costing, inventory valuation, routing-based costing, and manufacturing variance analysis.
- Background supporting high-growth or large-scale organizations with processes designed to scale effectively.
- Proficiency with ERP systems used in discrete manufacturing environments; experience with ECi M1 is highly valued.
- CPA or similar accounting credential is required.
