Original job description

We are looking for an experienced Business Unit Controller to lead financial oversight and controllership activities for a complex, multi-location business with locations in both the US and Canada. This position will guide reporting accuracy, strengthen governance, and create more consistent finance practices that support operational performance and long-term scalability. The role also serves as a key partner to business leadership by translating financial results into clear insights and building a strong, accountable finance organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities across the region to improve timeliness, consistency, and reporting quality.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, ensuring results are complete, reliable, and aligned with applicable accounting standards.
  • Build stronger balance sheet discipline by improving reconciliations, monitoring key accounts, and addressing issues that affect reporting accuracy.
  • Design and enhance internal control practices across areas such as inventory, receivables, and operational accounting to reduce risk and improve compliance.
  • Partner with business leaders, FP&A, shared services, and corporate finance teams to deliver meaningful financial insight and support sound decision-making.
  • Lead audit readiness efforts and act as the primary contact for external auditors during annual audit activities.
  • Drive finance transformation initiatives by standardizing workflows, centralizing repeatable tasks where appropriate, and establishing a more scalable controllership model.
  • Analyze financial variances and explain performance drivers in a clear, practical way for operational and executive stakeholders.
  • Coach and develop controllers and finance team members across multiple sites, promoting accountability, collaboration, and succession planning.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including leadership responsibility for multi-site controllership or accounting teams.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and month-end close processes.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required or strongly preferred based on comparable credentials.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or other multi-location operating environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading process standardization, centralization, or broader finance transformation efforts.
  • Ability to perform variance analysis, identify key business drivers, and communicate findings clearly to non-financial leaders.
  • Background in manufacturing cost accounting and cross-functional partnership within complex organizations.
