Original job description

We are looking for a Paralegal to join a collections-focused legal support team in Durham, North Carolina on a Contract basis. This role will help reduce a high-volume backlog involving delinquent accounts and support resolution efforts across multiple states. The ideal candidate is organized, comfortable coordinating with outside counsel, and able to build clear procedures and tracking methods that improve team visibility and follow-through. This is a permanent opportunity expected to last at least 3 months, with flexibility around standard business hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the collections team by managing legal and administrative work tied to accounts that have moved beyond 60 days past due.
  • Coordinate with external attorneys across multiple states to assist with eviction matters and other resolution pathways.
  • Develop state-specific reference materials that outline required steps, documentation, and timelines for legal follow-up.
  • Create and maintain a structured tracking system so the team can monitor case progress, deadlines, and outcomes efficiently.
  • Help reduce existing case backlog by organizing files, prioritizing matters, and advancing next steps in a timely manner.
  • Review account and tenant information in internal systems and shared documents to ensure records are current and actionable.
  • Use tools such as Rent Manager, Dropbox, and Microsoft 365 to manage documentation, communication, and reporting.
  • Partner with the manager and team members to improve consistency in workflows and support day-to-day collections operations.
  • Prior paralegal experience, ideally in eviction, foreclosure, collections, landlord-tenant matters, or related legal support work.
  • Working knowledge of legal processes associated with overdue accounts, notices, and case coordination.
  • Ability to manage matters across multiple jurisdictions while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Experience building trackers, process guides, or documentation that supports operational consistency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and comfort learning or using platforms such as Rent Manager and Dropbox.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with internal teams and outside counsel.
  • Availability to work standard hours for a contract assignment expected to run for at least 3 months.
  • Local availability in Durham, North Carolina is preferred, though remote candidates may be considered.
