We are looking for a Grant Accountant to support accurate financial reporting and compliance for grant-funded programs in Newark, New Jersey. This position is ideal for an accounting specialist with strong attention to detail who can manage detailed records, work confidently with spreadsheets, and oversee transactions across multiple funding sources. The role will contribute to day-to-day accounting operations while helping ensure reporting deadlines, audit readiness, and regulatory standards are consistently met.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accounting records for grant-funded activity, ensuring transactions are properly recorded and aligned with funding requirements.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, reconcile general ledger accounts, and investigate discrepancies to support accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Monitor spending across federal, state, county, and other grant sources to confirm expenses are allowable, documented, and within budget guidelines.
  • Develop financial reports and supporting schedules for internal review, grant reporting, and audit preparation.
  • Use advanced Excel functions to analyze financial data, track allocations, and present clear reporting on grant performance.
  • Assist with tax-related accounting activities, including support for corporate tax matters, sales tax obligations, and related financial documentation.
  • Work with accounting systems and reporting tools to maintain reliable financial information and improve efficiency in daily accounting tasks.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to gather financial details, resolve issues, and ensure timely submission of required reports and reconciliations.
  • Strong Excel proficiency, with the ability to work effectively with formulas, reconciliations, and financial analysis tools.
  • Accounting experience that includes journal entries, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliation.
  • Hands-on experience managing grant accounting for funding from government or similar sources, including federal, state, or county programs.
  • Familiarity with accounting software; experience with grant-related or nonprofit financial systems is an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of corporate tax concepts, sales tax, and financial recordkeeping requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a structured, accurate manner.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with internal teams and preparing financial reports.
