Original job description

Growing tech company is seeking a factional Product Counsel with strong privacy experience to support an AI-native product platform. This role will provide practical, business-oriented legal guidance across product development, privacy, and compliance matters in a fast-evolving environment where formal playbooks are still being developed. The ideal candidate will be highly collaborative, comfortable working closely with product, engineering, and privacy teams, and able to quickly learn complex products in order to proactively identify legal and privacy risks. This position is 100% remote so candidates from around the US are encouraged to apply and about 20-25 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to product and engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Stay closely aligned with product and privacy stakeholders to understand upcoming features, product changes, and new use cases, and help ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Counsel on privacy issues affecting product development, including questions related to what types of data can be collected, used, and deployed within products.
  • Advise on compliance with key privacy and AI-related laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA, the EU AI Act, and emerging U.S. AI regulations.
  • Review, draft, and mark-up data processing agreements (DPAs) and related privacy terms.
  • Participate in customer calls to address product privacy and compliance questions.
  • Support international product teams, particularly teams based in India, making availability during East Coast business hours highly desirable.
  • Identify and escalate specialized AI regulatory issues to internal AI regulatory counsel as appropriate.
  • Help build practical processes and guidance in an environment that does not yet have fully defined playbooks.

Qualifications

  • J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Significant experience as product counsel, commercial technology counsel, privacy counsel, or similar in-house role.
  • Strong background counseling on privacy issues embedded in products, preferably within technology or SaaS environments.
  • Experience advising product and engineering teams on data use, privacy-by-design, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with AI-related legal and regulatory frameworks, with the judgment to spot issues and escalate when needed.
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating DPAs and privacy-related contractual terms is preferred.
  • Ability to operate independently, learn products quickly, and provide pragmatic advice in a fast-moving environment.
  • Prior experience supporting global teams is a plus.
  • Ability to commit to part-time work (20-25 hours per week).
