Original job description
We are seeking a Cyber Security Engineer with strong networking and firewall expertise to support an enterprise micro-segmentation initiative. This role will focus on analyzing network traffic, identifying application dependencies, and developing security policies that control communication between applications, infrastructure, and end-user devices. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with stateful firewalls, network security rules, and traffic analysis. Experience with micro-segmentation platforms is highly desirable, but strong networking fundamentals are the priority. Experience with Illumio is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Analyze application and infrastructure traffic flows to identify communication patterns and dependencies.
- Design, document, test, and implement micro-segmentation policies and network security rules.
- Determine which network communications should be permitted or denied based on application requirements and security standards.
- Collaborate with application owners, infrastructure teams, and security engineers to validate communication requirements.
- Develop and refine enforcement policies to improve security and reduce overly permissive network access.
- Support the remediation and replacement of legacy security rules.
- Participate in implementation planning, testing, change management, and production deployments.
- Track assignments, document findings, and manage work through project management tools.
- Communicate technical findings and policy recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively across geographically distributed teams to support project execution.
Required Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with stateful firewalls and network security concepts.
- Strong understanding of network communications, traffic flows, and application dependencies.
- Experience writing, reviewing, and implementing network security rules.
- Understanding of micro-segmentation concepts and network policy enforcement.
- Foundational knowledge of Active Directory, Windows, Linux, and DNS.
- Experience working with technical teams and application owners to troubleshoot connectivity and validate requirements.
- Strong documentation, communication, analytical, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments independently and follow established change management processes.
- Experience using Jira or a similar project and task management platform.
- Ability to participate in meetings across multiple time zones as project needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Illumio or another micro-segmentation platform.
- Experience with centrally managed security policies and endpoint-based enforcement agents.
- Experience analyzing application traffic and mapping dependencies in a large enterprise environment.
- Experience implementing network security policies in production environments.
- Familiarity with enterprise change management, testing, and deployment procedures.
Work Environment and Schedule This is a fully remote contract opportunity. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, with flexibility required to accommodate collaboration across US, UK, and Australian time zones. Occasional meetings outside standard business hours may be necessary. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, managing a high volume of technical assignments, and collaborating with distributed application, infrastructure, and security teams. What Makes a Strong Candidate? Candidates with a solid foundation in networking, stateful firewalls, traffic analysis, and security policy development are encouraged to apply. Direct Illumio experience is beneficial but not required for candidates who bring relevant micro-segmentation knowledge and strong network security engineering skills.
