Original job description

We are looking for a Controller to lead the financial direction and accounting operations of our organization in San Marcos, California. This position plays a central role in strengthening reporting accuracy, guiding financial planning, and supporting sound business decisions across multiple operating areas. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, practical business insight, and the ability to partner with leadership to improve performance, controls, and long-term profitability.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the resort’s accounting function and ensure financial records, reporting activities, and operational finance processes are managed accurately and efficiently.
  • Produce and evaluate monthly financial statements, management reports, and performance analyses to help leadership understand results and trends.
  • Lead the budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning cycle, translating operational goals into clear financial plans and outlooks.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close activities, coordinate external audits, and work closely with outside auditors and tax advisors to support compliance.
  • Oversee cash flow, banking relationships, liquidity planning, investments, debt activity, and approved treasury transactions in line with company policy.
  • Supervise payroll-related financial controls, including gratuity and service charge reporting, while partnering with Human Resources on wage and payroll compliance matters.
  • Strengthen purchasing, receiving, and inventory controls by reviewing vendor practices, monitoring stock levels, and identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality.
  • Provide financial oversight for retail and country store operations by analyzing sales, margins, turnover, pricing decisions, and loss prevention practices.
  • Support technology and compliance needs by coordinating key system vendors, promoting data security practices, and maintaining required licenses, permits, and regulatory filings.
  • Collaborate with department leaders on profitability initiatives, capital planning, policy development, and broader operational improvements that support organizational goals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading accounting and financial operations in a complex business environment, preferably within hospitality, resort, retail, or service-based operations.
  • Strong background in month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Proficiency with Sage 100 and the ability to work effectively with accounting and operational systems.
  • Solid understanding of internal controls, cash management, audit coordination, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Experience overseeing payroll-related financial processes and analyzing labor cost performance.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data, develop actionable recommendations, and communicate effectively with cross-functional leadership.
