Original job description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to provide financial leadership and day-to-day accounting support for a wholesale distribution operation in Rochester, New York. This Long-term Contract position is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented individual who can bring stability, oversee core finance activities, and help keep priorities on track in a fast-moving environment. The role will partner closely with local and global finance stakeholders while supporting ongoing operational needs across the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily accounting and finance activities to ensure accurate reporting, timely close processes, and dependable financial oversight for the site.
  • Partner with internal finance leadership and cross-functional teams to monitor performance, address issues, and keep critical deliverables moving forward.
  • Provide hands-on support across core controllership functions, including general ledger review, reconciliations, month-end activities, and financial analysis.
  • Coordinate with shared and centralized support teams to maintain smooth accounts payable and accounts receivable workflows and resolve escalated items as needed.
  • Support ad hoc financial projects, reporting requests, and process follow-up to help the organization maintain continuity during a period of change.
  • Oversee the work of available accounting resources and external support, helping assign priorities and ensuring essential tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Assist with knowledge transfer and cross-training during the onboarding period to promote a smooth transition into the role.
  • Contribute to finance-related activities tied to operational system go-live milestones and business integration efforts when needed.
  • Proven experience serving as a Controller or senior-level accounting/finance leader in a distribution, manufacturing, or similar operational setting.
  • Strong hands-on accounting skills with the ability to manage routine financial activities while also handling urgent and unplanned requests.
  • Solid understanding of financial reporting, general ledger management, reconciliations, and month-end close responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid arrangement, with availability to be on-site in Rochester, New York as needed, including an initial period of in-person cross-training.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate across local teams, shared services, and senior finance leadership.
  • Experience providing structure and follow-through in environments undergoing transition or organizational change.
  • Familiarity with ERP or legacy accounting systems is helpful, and the ability to adapt quickly to multiple platforms is a strong advantage.
