Original job description

We are looking for a hands-on Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations for a manufacturing business in North Carolina. This role is well suited for a finance specialist who combines strong technical accounting expertise with the ability to guide a small team and support operational decision-making. The position will play a central role in financial reporting, cost analysis, cash management, and maintaining accurate records in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the monthly close process and produce timely financial statements, including profit and loss reporting, balance sheets, and supporting account schedules.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by completing account reconciliations, reviewing banking activity, and strengthening internal accounting controls.
  • Manage manufacturing-related accounting activities such as inventory valuation, standard cost review, freight analysis, cost of goods sold reporting, and margin performance evaluation.
  • Track liquidity needs by overseeing cash activity, preparing forecasts, and monitoring payables, receivables, aging trends, and collection efforts.
  • Partner with insurance brokers to administer medical, trade credit, and general liability coverage, including renewals, documentation, claims coordination, and compliance reporting.
  • Evaluate customer credit risk by monitoring exposure levels, maintaining approved coverage limits, and ensuring required notifications are handled appropriately.
  • Work closely with external accounting partners on year-end procedures, financial statement support, tax preparation assistance, and other technical accounting matters.
  • Supervise and develop a small accounting staff by providing direction, coaching, and day-to-day oversight for team members supporting payables and collections.
  • Present financial results to leadership, research variances, and recommend practical actions to address issues and improve performance.
  • Experience in accounting leadership within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of inventory accounting, cost accounting, and standard costing methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage month-end close, general ledger activity, and financial reporting with a high level of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of cash flow planning, receivables management, payables oversight, and account reconciliation practices.
  • Ability to balance hands-on accounting execution with leadership of a small team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Great Plains and solid overall accounting systems experience.
  • Familiarity with transfer pricing concepts is preferred.
  • An accounting designation is preferred but not required.
