Original job description

We are looking for a motivated attorney to join a workers’ compensation defense practice serving clients in Maryland. This permanent opportunity is well suited for an early-career or mid-level lawyer who enjoys litigation, client counseling, and managing matters from initial review through resolution. The role focuses on representing employers, insurance carriers, and related stakeholders in workers’ compensation disputes while delivering thoughtful, practical legal guidance. Candidates with backgrounds in workers’ compensation, insurance defense, labor and employment, or broader civil litigation are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Represent employer and carrier clients in workers’ compensation proceedings before the appropriate Maryland forums and related appearances.
  • Oversee assigned files through each stage of the matter, including early assessment, fact development, discovery, negotiated resolution, hearings, and post-hearing activity when necessary.
  • Prepare persuasive legal documents such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and client correspondence with close attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Review medical, payroll, and claim documentation to evaluate exposure, identify issues, and support defense strategy.
  • Advise clients on case developments, litigation risk, and recommended approaches in a clear and business-focused manner.
  • Prepare witnesses, clients, and experts for depositions, hearings, and other contested proceedings.
  • Participate in settlement discussions, mediations, and appellate-related work as matters require.
  • Work closely with other attorneys and legal staff to develop case strategy, coordinate workflow, and maintain strong service standards.
  • Monitor changes in Maryland workers’ compensation law and related employment or insurance topics to support effective representation.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in Maryland, or the ability to secure admission promptly.
  • Up to 7 years of legal experience in a law firm or comparable practice setting.
  • Prior exposure to workers’ compensation defense, insurance defense, labor and employment, or civil litigation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated strength in legal writing, research, oral advocacy, and motion practice.
  • Ability to manage multiple active matters while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and careful attention to detail.
  • Capability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative legal team.
