Original job description

We are looking for a trial-focused Attorney/Lawyer to join a fast-paced criminal defense practice. This permanent, in-office opportunity offers early courtroom exposure, meaningful case ownership, and close guidance from experienced senior counsel. The role is ideal for a lawyer who wants to build strong advocacy skills while handling criminal matters and related litigation with increasing responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee an assigned caseload from intake through resolution while collaborating with senior attorneys on strategy and case development.
  • Conduct meetings with current and prospective clients to assess legal needs, explain case status, and build trusted working relationships.
  • Analyze discovery materials, identify critical factual and legal issues, and prepare concise summaries to support defense planning.
  • Draft persuasive motions, legal briefs, and post-judgment filings supported by thorough research and sound legal reasoning.
  • Prepare matters for hearings, bench proceedings, and jury trials in both state and federal courts.
  • Coordinate investigative efforts, gather supporting evidence, and help shape defense themes for contested proceedings.
  • Present arguments in court and contribute to trial execution through direct advocacy and case presentation.
  • Support work involving related matters such as appeals, family law issues, or civil disputes when needed.
  • Juris Doctor degree with strong academic performance.
  • Active law license, or current eligibility to sit for the bar or await pending bar results.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in criminal law, criminal litigation, or closely related trial practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to research legal issues, draft motions and briefs, and communicate effectively in writing and in court.
  • Knowledge of criminal procedure, discovery practice, and case preparation in contested matters.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage files independently while contributing to a team environment.
  • Background in trial advocacy, moot court, mock trial, or similar courtroom-focused training is preferred.
  • Must be based in or prepared to relocate to Abilene, Texas before the start date.
