Original job description
We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to lead core accounting activities and provide dependable financial insight for a commercial construction company in Columbia, South Carolina. This role is responsible for all daily accounting operations, payroll administration, and financial reporting while helping project and operational leaders understand cost performance, cash position, and areas of financial exposure. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in general accounting together with practical knowledge of construction job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting. Experience using Sage 300 is especially valuable for success in this position.
Responsibilities:
- Direct daily accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, journal entry review, accruals, and the completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles.
- Prepare and validate reconciliations for bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and supporting schedules to maintain accurate and complete financial records.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, ensuring proper invoice coding, timely disbursements, accurate cash application, and effective follow-up on outstanding balances.
- Administer biweekly payroll processing, maintain payroll records, record related expenses and liabilities, and ensure payroll tax filings and payments are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Produce financial reports in alignment with generally accepted accounting principles and established construction accounting practices, while supporting audits, cash flow planning, and related analysis.
- Strengthen internal controls, refine accounting procedures, and identify opportunities to improve workflow efficiency and reporting accuracy.
- Maintain fixed asset records by tracking acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, and related reconciliations.
- Develop and analyze work-in-progress schedules, including project costs, billings, estimated costs to complete, and projected margins across active jobs.
- Collaborate with project managers and operational leaders to review job performance, assess budget variances, evaluate cost-to-complete estimates, and flag potential overruns or financial risks.
- Manage accounting activity within Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate across key modules such as general ledger, job cost, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, while supporting accurate revenue recognition and change order tracking.
- At least 3 years of accounting experience, with meaningful exposure to commercial construction accounting environments.
- Strong working knowledge of month-end close processes, general ledger management, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
- Experience preparing financial information for audits and supporting accurate, compliant financial reporting.
- Hands-on understanding of job cost accounting, work-in-progress schedules, progress billings, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
- Ability to manage payroll processing and maintain compliance with payroll tax and employment regulations.
- Proficiency with Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate or closely related construction accounting software.
- Solid analytical skills with the ability to interpret project cost trends, profitability, and cash flow data for operational decision-making.
