Original job description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting/Finance Manager to provide financial leadership for a portfolio of education and nonprofit clients in the greater Indianapolis area. This role combines hands-on oversight of core accounting operations with high-level advisory support, helping organizational leaders make informed decisions through accurate reporting, planning, and analysis. The position also plays an important part in developing local client relationships, strengthening operational practices, and guiding a growing accounting team.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct accounting operations across multiple client accounts, overseeing items such as payables, grant activity, revenue tracking, close processes, financial statements, and audit readiness.
  • Advise executive leaders on budgeting, forecasting, cash planning, and long-range financial strategy by translating data into practical recommendations.
  • Prepare and deliver financial updates and forward-looking analysis to leadership teams, board members, and finance committees.
  • Review ledger activity, reconciliations, and journal entries completed by accounting staff to maintain accuracy and consistency in reporting.
  • Lead monthly and annual close cycles while maintaining compliance with accounting standards, grant conditions, and internal control expectations.
  • Coordinate external audit activities by organizing schedules, supporting documentation, and communication among auditors, clients, and internal stakeholders.
  • Mentor and supervise accounting professionals, setting clear expectations and supporting ongoing development and performance improvement.
  • Enhance accounting workflows, controls, and reporting tools to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability as the client base expands.
  • Build relationships across the Indiana education and nonprofit community, contribute to business development efforts, and represent the organization at relevant industry events.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; certification such as CPA or CMA is preferred.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including a minimum of two years leading or supervising staff.
  • Strong command of general ledger accounting, month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, audit support, and internal controls.
  • Experience guiding and developing accounting team members in a multi-priority environment.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to executives, board members, and other non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with accounting software such as Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or comparable systems, along with advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit, charter school, public education, or grant-based accounting environments is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clients or projects while contributing to market growth and relationship development.
