Accounting Manager

We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to provide steady financial leadership for a Long-term Contract assignment supporting a higher education organization in Troy, Michigan. This role will oversee core accounting operations, strengthen financial controls, and deliver accurate reporting that supports sound decision-making during a period of leadership change. The position is well suited for a hands-on finance leader who can guide daily activities, maintain compliance deadlines, and help keep budgeting, cash management, and close processes on track.

Responsibilities:

• Direct daily accounting activities, including oversight of cash flow, financial records, and internal controls to support stable finance operations.
• Lead the monthly close cycle and ensure financial results are finalized within the required reporting timeline.
• Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring payments and collections are handled accurately and in accordance with agreed terms.
• Review banking activity across institutional accounts, supervise reconciliations, and monitor deposits, withdrawals, and overall cash position.
• Coordinate with internal partners to align funding draw schedules, payroll-related expenses, and other cash planning needs.
• Manage preparation for the annual audit and support timely completion of required tax filings and related financial documentation.
• Produce month-end financial statements and variance analysis to monitor operating performance and compare budget to actual results.
• Update and track budget assumptions, including benefit cost changes, while building a consistent monthly budget monitoring process.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff members, providing guidance, prioritization, and day-to-day leadership to the team.
• Support finance processes involving systems such as banking platforms and accounting tools, including Blackbaud and related operational applications.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance leadership experience, including ownership of month-end close and financial reporting.
• Strong knowledge of general ledger management, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end accounting procedures.
• Experience supporting financial statement audits and working with external auditors to meet reporting deadlines.
• Proven ability to manage cash flow, budgeting, and budget-versus-actual analysis in an operational finance environment.
• Advanced Excel skills with the ability to analyze data, build reports, and improve financial tracking.
• Experience leading or supervising accounting team members and partnering effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
• Familiarity with banking platforms and financial systems; exposure to Blackbaud or similar tools is helpful.
• Ability to work onsite in Troy, Michigan, with a schedule of Monday through Thursday onsite and remote work on Friday.
