Original job description

We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee financial operations and project accounting for assigned business units in San Diego, California. This role partners closely with operational leaders to deliver accurate reporting, strengthen financial controls, and support sound business decisions. The ideal candidate brings strong construction accounting expertise, a hands-on approach to month-end close, and the ability to guide a team while maintaining high standards for accuracy and accountability.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and mentor accounting team members, set clear expectations, prioritize workload, and review deliverables to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Act as a key accounting partner to business leaders and project teams by providing dependable financial insight while upholding strong accounting judgment and compliance standards.
  • Manage the monthly work-in-progress review for assigned entities, verifying contract data, project costs, change orders, billings, retention activity, and revenue recognition in accordance with applicable guidance.
  • Evaluate cost forecasts and project assumptions, investigate unusual shifts in margin or performance, and raise concerns when estimates are not adequately supported.
  • Oversee project accounting records, including job creation, cost coding, contract updates, budget revisions, billing activity, retention tracking, and closeout accuracy.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, intercompany balancing, and review of supporting documentation.
  • Collaborate with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, compliance, and operations teams to resolve discrepancies, confirm proper cutoffs, and maintain accurate financial classification.
  • Monitor cash flow drivers such as collections, billing schedules, retention, subcontractor commitments, and payroll needs, and escalate significant financial risks when necessary.
  • Strengthen accounting operations by developing internal controls, standardizing procedures across assigned companies, and supporting audits and external financial information requests.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, or comparable progressive accounting experience.
  • At least seven years of advancing accounting experience, including a minimum of four years in construction or specialty contractor environments.
  • Strong background in month-end close, general ledger management, account reconciliation, and preparation of journal entries.
  • Experience with work-in-progress accounting, project-based revenue recognition, and analysis of job margins, billings, and cash exposure.
  • Proficiency with a large ERP.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting standards, internal controls, and audit support for external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead accounting staff, work cross-functionally with operations, and communicate material financial issues clearly and promptly.
