Original job description

We are looking for an experienced Accountant to support a nonprofit organization through a Long-term Contract assignment based in Stamford, Connecticut, with work performed fully remotely. This role focuses on core accounting operations, financial analysis, reconciliations, and reporting activities that help maintain accurate records and support compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The ideal candidate brings strong Excel capabilities, hands-on nonprofit accounting experience, and confidence working with Form 990-related documentation. This position is expected to run for 3 to 6 months, with potential for longer-term or permanent consideration.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day accounting for revenue, expenses, and balance sheet activity while ensuring entries are recorded accurately and in accordance with nonprofit accounting guidance.
  • Review contributions, grants, and other funding transactions to determine proper classification and recognition within the general ledger.
  • Maintain accounting records for investment holdings and endowment activity, including tracking balances and related financial impacts.
  • Prepare and complete account reconciliations, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies to support the accuracy of monthly financial results.
  • Support accounts payable and other disbursement-related accounting tasks, including posting journal entries and monitoring expense activity.
  • Assist with month-end close by preparing schedules, analyzing account activity, and helping deliver timely financial reporting.
  • Compile audit-ready documentation and provide support for external audit requests as well as Form 990 preparation activities.
  • Offer guidance to less experienced team members and recommend practical improvements that strengthen accounting workflows and efficiency.
  • At least 3 years of accounting experience, including prior work in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong command of nonprofit accounting principles, including treatment of contributions, grants, and restricted funding.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to analyze data, prepare reconciliations, and support reporting needs.
  • Experience working with general ledger activity, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with audit support processes, including preparing schedules and responding to documentation requests.
  • Comfort assisting with or supporting Tax Form 990 reporting requirements.
  • Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, and effective time management in deadline-driven close cycles.
