Join us on our mission to empower more people to find their way home by breaking barriers to entry, making the right connections, and building confidence through expert guidance.
We are seeking a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to join our newly formed Consumer Observability team, reporting to the Engineering Manager, Consumer Observability. This role will contribute to the reliability and observability of the consumer experiences that millions of home shoppers use on web and native apps. As a Staff SRE, you will be a strong technical contributor who sets service-level standards, solves complex reliability problems, and works with feature and service teams so they can find and fix consumer-facing issues quickly.
What You’ll Do:
Service Reliability
- Define SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets for critical consumer journeys and the services behind them, and drive the policies teams follow when targets are missed
- Set standards for golden signals (latency, traffic, errors, saturation) and system availability across web, apps, APIs, and GraphQL services
- Participate in architectural and production-readiness reviews for reliability, capacity, and cost, including graceful degradation when a dependency fails
Observability
- Implement observability solutions using New Relic or a similar tool for APM, browser, mobile, distributed tracing, metrics, events, and logging for rapid troubleshooting
- Define observability standards (metrics, events, logs, traces) with feature and service teams, and help them adopt them in their code
- Build dashboards, SLOs, and alerts as code (Terraform or similar) through CI/CD that reduce MTTD and MTTR, and make sure the signals behind them can be trusted
- Track web performance and Core Web Vitals alongside service health
Automation & Incident Response
- Build automation, including AI-assisted tools, that finds observability gaps and speeds up investigation
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical systems; conduct post-incident reviews and implement improvements
- Create runbooks and automation that help any engineer find where a problem started
Technical Contribution
- Contribute as a strong technical individual contributor and technical lead for the Consumer Observability team
- Partner with feature, service, Platform Engineering, and Quality Engineering teams on reliability initiatives
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring across Consumer engineering
What You'll Bring:
- 8+ years in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or software engineering with demonstrated success improving system reliability
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Proven experience defining SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets for production services
- Production experience with observability tools (New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana) and distributed systems, including APM, distributed tracing, and alerting
- Experience working with feature and service teams on large consumer-facing web and mobile applications, and driving a standard many teams adopted
- Strong SRE foundations: AWS and Kubernetes, Linux, networking (DNS, HTTP, CDNs, load balancers), capacity planning, and reliability patterns such as retries, circuit breakers, and failover
- Proficient programming skills (Python, Go, or TypeScript/JavaScript), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), and CI/CD pipelines and automation
- Experience with on-call rotation, incident response, and post-incident reviews
- Preferred: GraphQL federation, Core Web Vitals and real user monitoring, OpenTelemetry, AI-assisted automation
Technical Skills
- Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (EKS, EC2, Lambda, CloudFront, Route53), Kubernetes, Docker, Linux
- Observability: New Relic or similar - APM, browser, mobile, distributed tracing, logs, service levels
- Reliability: SLIs, SLOs, SLAs, error budgets, synthetic monitoring, load testing, chaos and failover testing
- IaC & Automation: Terraform, Helm, Python/Go/TypeScript/Bash
- CI/CD & GitOps: CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Argo CD
- Platform Services: API gateways, Apollo GraphQL, feature flag platforms
- Incident Management: OpsGenie, PagerDuty, ServiceNow
Professional Qualities
- Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Collaborative approach working across engineering, product, and business teams
- Self-motivated with ability to solve complex problems within established practices and policies
- Data-driven decision making with customer-centric approach and empathy for developer experience
