Description This is a remote independent contractor opportunity working closely with our US-based team. Candidates should have strong English communication skills and availability for scheduled collaboration during US Central or Eastern Time hours. Rankings.io helps elite law firms dominate first-page search results through SEO, paid media and data-driven insight. We're a remote-first team, and our Data & Analytics group runs the warehouse, dashboards and AI tools that client teams and leadership rely on every day. As our Analytics Engineer, you'll turn raw data from more than a dozen sources into clean, tested models in BigQuery, the layer every dashboard, report and AI workflow is built on. Success looks like new data sources reaching reporting faster, models the team trusts without second-guessing, and dashboards that stay fast and accurate as we grow. Our Stack: Google Cloud (GCP) - BigQuery (GoogleSQL), dbt, Python on Cloud Run, Terraform and GitHub Actions - with Looker Studio for reporting and Claude for AI-assisted work.
Responsibilities
- Data Modeling: Share ownership of our BigQuery marts with the Data & Analytics team, building and maintaining dbt models from staging through marts and reporting layers, designed for business intelligence, reporting and downstream analytics.
- New Data Sources: Turn newly onboarded sources into tested, documented marts, working from the team's field inventory, so new reporting can start sooner.
- Data Quality & Testing: Write schema and data tests and monitoring that protect accuracy and lineage. Connect disparate data sets, such as accounting, CRM and marketing data, into unified models for cross-system reporting.
- Reporting: Build clean, performant dashboards and reports in Looker Studio for client teams and internal stakeholders, including Finance.
- Performance Tuning: Troubleshoot and optimize SQL and model runtimes for speed and BigQuery cost, using partitioning, clustering and incremental models.
- AI-Ready Data: Keep models documented and reliable for the AI tools that query our warehouse, and use AI assistants to speed up SQL, testing and documentation work.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders and the Data & Analytics team to translate business requirements into data solutions, working through Git pull requests and code reviews.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in analytics engineering, data engineering or BI development.
- SQL: Advanced SQL skills (CTEs, window functions, complex joins, query optimization).
- Data Modeling: Experience structuring modular layers (staging → marts), writing schema and data tests, and documenting models with dbt or a similar framework.
- Programming: Solid Python for data manipulation (pandas), API integrations and automation.
- Data Warehousing: Hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse. BigQuery preferred; Snowflake, Databricks or Amazon Redshift experience is welcome.
- BI & Dashboarding: Experience building clean, performant reports in Looker Studio, Power BI or Tableau.
- Version Control: Proficient with Git, standard CI/CD workflows and code review practices.
- Communication: Clear written English for documentation, pull requests and async work with a U.S.-based team.
- Technology and Security Requirement: Contractors accessing Rankings.io systems and client data are required, under the terms of the Contractor Services Agreement, to maintain endpoint security software (Huntress) for the duration of the engagement. This does not grant Rankings.io remote access to, or control over, contractor devices.
Preferred:
- AI Tools: Hands-on use of AI assistants (such as Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot) in day-to-day data work.
- Cloud Platforms: Working knowledge of Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Cloud Scheduler), Terraform or Docker.
- Domain Data: Experience with marketing data (GA4, Search Console, Google Ads, CallRail, HubSpot) or accounting data.
- Industry: Experience at a marketing agency or with legal-industry clients.
Compensation & Work Environment
- Monthly retainer of $3,300 - 4,100 USD, invoiced by the contractor.
- Fully Remote
- Long-term engagement opportunity
