Title Lab Technician:
Position Overview
We are seeking an inquisitive and motivated Junior Lab Technician to support our testing and prototyping operations. In this role, you will assist engineering teams with the day-to-day setup, maintenance, debugging, and verification of hardware and software environments. This is a hands-on position ideal for an early-career technician, recent graduate, or self-taught builder passionate about embedded hardware, Linux environments, and robotics or autonomous platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Lab & Bench Setup: Assemble, wire, and configure test benches, sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, and single-board computers (SBCs).
System Testing & Flashing: Flash operating system images and firmware onto embedded devices; assist with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests.
Linux Environment Support: Boot, configure, and maintain Linux-based development machines and edge devices (setting up network interfaces, permissions, and packages).
Autonomous Hardware Support: Mount, calibrate, and verify sensors (e.g., LiDAR, cameras, IMUs, GPS) used across autonomous and robotic test rigs.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Use standard lab equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and software log utilities to isolate hardware, wiring, and communication faults.
Inventory & Safety: Maintain lab equipment inventory, organize test rigs, and enforce lab safety protocols (ESD protection, battery handling, power supplies).
Required & Preferred SkillsCore Qualifications
Associate degree, trade school certification, or equivalent practical experience in Electronics, Robotics, Computer Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Familiarity with basic electronic prototyping, wiring, crimping, and reading basic schematics or pinout diagrams.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to log and document test procedures clearly.
Highly Regarded Skills (Expanded)
Linux Systems & Command-Line Operations
Practical comfort navigating the Linux terminal (e.g., Ubuntu/Debian flavors).
Managing services (systemctl), reading system logs (journalctl, dmesg), and basic shell scripting (bash) for automating repetitive setup routines.
Basic networking configuration (SSH, static IP setup, ping/traceroute, Wi-Fi/Ethernet interfaces) for remote device access.
Embedded Systems & Microcontrollers
Practical experience working with SBCs (Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson) and microcontroller platforms (ESP32, STM32, Arduino).
Understanding of low-level communication protocols: UART, I2C, SPI, and CAN bus.
Experience with firmware updates, image flashing tools (e.g., balenaEtcher, dd), and serial debugging tools (minicom, screen, PuTTY).
Autonomous & Robotic Platforms
Exposure to the sensor hardware that enables autonomy (cameras, ultrasonic sensors, LiDAR, IMU, wheel encoders).
Basic familiarity with robotics middleware or architectures (e.g., ROS/ROS 2, ArduPilot, PX4) is a significant plus.
Experience troubleshooting physical moving systems, motor controllers, servo actuation, and battery management systems (LiPo/Li-ion safety).
