Position Overview
Power your future with Qualus as a Senior Electrical Engineer.
In this role, you will take technical ownership of electrical engineering and power system projects from initial scoping through final design and issued-for-construction (IFC) deliverables. You will independently execute medium- and low-voltage power system design, protection and control (P&C) engineering, and power system studies while ensuring that work meets Qualus standards, applicable codes, client requirements, project budgets, and schedules.
Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to translate field conditions and client needs into practical, constructible engineering solutions. You will work directly with project managers, designers, engineers, field personnel, and clients while also supporting business development through site walks, scope development, and technical proposal input.
Responsibilities
- Perform power system studies, including short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, grounding, and related analyses.
- Lead and independently execute medium- and low-voltage electrical design for brownfield and greenfield projects, including outdoor substations, unit substations, power transformers, protection and control systems, power monitoring systems, and breaker and relay replacements.
- Develop technical specifications for medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment.
- Direct and coordinate with CAD/design staff in the development and revision of electrical drawings, including one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and related design documentation.
- Review and interpret field data to support engineering analysis, design development, and project execution.
- Develop and review protective relay setpoints, settings, and associated documentation.
- Analyze power monitoring data and develop technically sound recommendations for clients.
- Perform engineering reviews to ensure deliverables are accurate, coordinated, constructible, and compliant with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and client requirements.
- Serve as a technical representative of Qualus, often alongside sales and business development, during customer meetings, site walks, project kickoffs, and other client-facing activities.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, designers, field personnel, and other Qualus teams to establish project requirements and execute work efficiently.
- Assess project-specific engineering resource needs and communicate staffing, schedule, scope, or technical concerns to the project manager.
- Participate in project kickoff and coordination meetings to align the project team on scope, specifications, budget, schedule, deliverables, and safety requirements.
- Identify changes in scope or project conditions and provide timely technical input needed to support change management.
- Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to identify materials and equipment that meet project technical requirements.
- Maintain required safety and technical training and comply with Qualus, client, and industry safety requirements.
- Complete required project documentation, including timekeeping, change documentation, technical reports, and other deliverable-related records, accurately and on time.
- Travel to customer facilities and project sites as required, up to approximately 30%.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience involving primary power distribution, protection and control, electrical equipment, and/or industrial power systems.
- Demonstrated experience developing protective relay setpoints and settings files.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, ANSI C57, ANSI C37, and NESC.
- Experience applying electrical engineering codes and standards to substation and industrial power distribution designs.
- 2+ years of AutoCAD experience.
- 3+ years of experience with power system modeling and analysis software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, and/or EasyPower.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical findings and recommendations to clients.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage engineering assignments while maintaining accuracy, quality, and attention to detail.
