Original job description

Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) (Remote, US-Based Only)

Build quality into software that matters.

At Pulsara, great testing requires more than finding defects or building automated tests. Our Senior Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) combine hands-on testing with software engineering expertise to build and sustain reliable automation, solve complex technical challenges, and mentor others while helping shape the team's approach to software quality.

And reliability matters here.

Pulsara is used by healthcare professionals coordinating care for time-critical patients. The defects you uncover, the automation you build, and the expertise you share help deliver software our customers can depend on when it matters most.

If you enjoy tackling complex testing challenges, improving how software is built and tested, and helping others succeed, keep reading.

What is Pulsara?

Pulsara connects people when seconds matter.

Pulsara is a secure, user-friendly software software solution that unites the entire care team, even across different departments or organizations. By replacing multiple phone calls, radio reports, faxes, and pagers with one unified patient channel, Pulsara streamlines workflows, leading to reduced treatment times, lower costs, and enhanced experiences for both patients and caregivers.

Who we are:

Pulsara is a 100% remote team made up of people with backgrounds in technology, healthcare, emergency services, business, and beyond, united by a common purpose: to improve the lives of people in need and those who serve them.

Working remotely gives us flexibility, but great remote work takes more than being able to work from home. We communicate intentionally, collaborate across teams, take ownership of our work, and depend on one another to follow through.

We are a company that continues to evolve. We value people who are curious, comfortable learning, willing to challenge how things have always been done, and interested in helping us make both our product and the way we work better.

🔗 Want to learn more? Explore our technology at Pulsara.com and discover our team, culture, and benefits on our Careers page.

What You’ll Be Testing

Pulsara isn’t a single web application.

Our technology environment includes:

📱 Native iOS and Android applications 💻 Web-based patient care, administration, and reporting tools ☁️ A highly scalable AWS cloud environment 🔌 Internal and public APIs 🗄️ Relational databases and complex data workflows 🔐 Secure, HIPAA-compliant systems supporting communication across organizations

That means testing often requires looking beyond a single screen or expected workflow. A change in one area may affect workflows elsewhere, and understanding those relationships is an important part of becoming effective in this role.

Your Primary Job Focus and Day-to-Day Activities Will Include:

⚙️ Build and sustain reliable automation Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks and test suites that perform reliably over time. Improve test coverage, execution performance, and maintainability while minimizing flaky tests.

🔄 Strengthen testing tools and environments Create, maintain, and troubleshoot test environments and supporting tools. Integrate automated testing into CI/CD workflows to help identify issues earlier and support dependable releases.

🔍 Plan and execute effective testing across the Pulsara platform Develop practical test strategies, plans, and reusable test cases based on requirements, technical complexity, risk, and customer workflows. Perform manual and automated testing across mobile and web applications, internal and public APIs, database migrations, and tools running in AWS to identify defects, risks, and unexpected behavior.

🤝 Lead through technical expertise and mentorship Share your experience designing and maintaining reliable automation to mentor other Test Engineering team members, strengthen their technical capabilities, and help shape the team's approach to testing and automation.

🧠 Think beyond the happy path Explore edge cases, complex system interactions, and real-world conditions. Apply technical expertise and sound judgment to determine where automation adds value and where hands-on testing is essential.

🐞 Investigate and communicate problems clearly Troubleshoot complex defects and test failures, document reproducible findings, collaborate on solutions, and verify fixes.

🏥 Keep the customer in focus Understand how healthcare professionals use Pulsara and recognize where technical issues, unexpected behavior, or workflow friction could affect their ability to coordinate care.

🚀 Help us continuously improve Identify opportunities to improve testing practices, automation, and tools. Apply new technologies, including AI-assisted tools, where they meaningfully improve quality and efficiency.

What We Are Looking For

✅ Demonstrated expertise in software testing and quality assurance, including test planning, manual and exploratory testing, regression testing, and defect reporting

✅ A proven track record of designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable automation frameworks and substantial test suites over time, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing across mobile, web, and API environments

✅ Experience mentoring other engineers or testers, sharing technical expertise, and helping guide testing and automation practices

✅ Hands-on programming or scripting experience with languages such as Swift, Java, Kotlin, Ruby, TypeScript, Bash, Python, or comparable technologies

✅ Practical experience testing mobile and web applications, internal and public APIs, database migrations, and complex system integrations

✅ Experience with mobile testing tools and frameworks such as Xcode/XCTest for iOS, Android Studio/Espresso/Jetpack Compose for Android, and Playwright for web

✅ Experience with GitHub, GitHub Actions, CI/CD workflows, Linux environments, and troubleshooting automated tests and test environments

✅ Working knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, CloudWatch, ECS, ECR, or CloudFormation, and familiarity with supporting tools such as Docker or Fastlane

✅ Experience with test management and issue-tracking tools such as Jira, Qase, or comparable platforms

✅ Strong technical judgment, debugging, and problem-solving skills, including identifying root causes and determining when manual or automated testing is most effective

✅ Effective communication and collaboration with Software Engineers, Product Managers, DevOps, and other testing professionals

✅ Hands-on experience exploring AI-assisted development and testing tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or ChatGPT, including using LLMs to generate test cases, test data, or support troubleshooting. Familiarity with testing nondeterministic AI outputs is a plus.

✅ Experience testing healthcare technology, mission-critical software, or applications in regulated environments is a plus, but not required.

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is welcome but not required. We place greater value on demonstrated capabilities, the testing challenges you've solved, the automation you've built, and how you've helped others succeed.

What Makes Someone Great at This Job

🌟 You’re curious. You dig into complex systems, ask thoughtful questions, and investigate until you understand not just what happened, but why.

🌟 You think like the customer. You understand that technically correct software isn't always a good customer experience. You consider how Pulsara works in real-world situations and advocate for quality that matters to the people using it.

🌟 You see both the details and the big picture. You can uncover subtle defects, recognize patterns across systems, and understand how changes in one area may affect another.

🌟 You make others better. You enjoy sharing what you know, mentoring less-experienced team members, and helping others strengthen their technical and testing capabilities.

🌟 You collaborate and take ownership. You communicate clearly, exercise sound judgment, work through problems with others, and take pride in the quality of what the team delivers.

Cover Letter Required Please briefly introduce yourself and tell us why you're interested in joining Pulsara. We'd especially like to hear about your experience with hands-on testing and automation, an accomplishment that demonstrates your ability to build or sustain reliable testing solutions, and how you've helped others develop their technical skills.

We're more interested in what you've accomplished, the challenges you've solved, and the impact you've made than how many years you've held a particular title.
