Original job description

PsiQuantum's mission is to build the first useful quantum computers: machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.

Our architecture and approach is based on silicon photonics. By leveraging the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry, including partners like GlobalFoundries, we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photons don't feel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.

That approach has since been tested at the highest level of scrutiny the U.S. government applies to emerging technology, and it has held up. In 2025, PsiQuantum closed a $1 billion funding round that valued the company at $7 billion. In 2026, the U.S. Department of Commerce signed a $100 million Letter of Intent under the CHIPS and Science Act, followed by a $125 million agreement with DARPA under Stage C of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, PsiQuantum's most valuable U.S. government agreement to date. This year, we also broke ground on our utility-scale quantum computer in Brisbane, Australia, and continued building out our Chicago site. Victor Peng, our CEO, and co-founder Jeremy O'Brien, now Executive Chairman, lead a team and board that reflects how seriously the world is taking this build, joined this year by Intel's Lip-Bu Tan and Atomico's Niklas Zennström.

PsiQuantum also develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies, including Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical, to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.

Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. It represents a fundamental shift, and a path to mastering challenges that cannot be solved any other way. The potential is enormous, and we now have the funding, the government validation, and the sites under construction to make it real.

Job Summary:

The Director of Quality, Reliability and I/O will lead the teams and foundry partnerships responsible for quality, reliability, and advanced interconnect technologies across PsiQuantum’s photonic and electronic platforms. The scope includes wafer-level bumping, Optical I/O, electrical I/O and back-end interconnect, and the interface with EIC foundries. This leader will set technical direction, build and develop multidisciplinary teams, and ensure that processes and components meet product performance, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule requirements. Working across design, process integration, product, test, and external manufacturing partners, the Director will establish qualification strategies, resolve yield and reliability issues, and mature technology from development through product and system builds.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Quality and Reliability functions, setting priorities, operating plans, and technical direction to support product and platform development.
  • Build and manage teams responsible for wafer-level bumping, Optical I/O, electrical I/O and back-end interconnect technologies.
  • Lead the EIC foundry interface, coordinating technology qualification, design requirements, and issue resolution with foundry partners.
  • Manage the teams maintaining quality systems, reliability plans, qualification methods, acceptance criteria, and engineering controls for relevant processes and products.
  • Direct qualification and reliability programs for wafer level relialbility qualification including test-vehicle strategy, data review, and qualification readiness.
  • Drive cross-functional investigations into yield, quality, reliability, and manufacturing issues; coordinate corrective and preventive actions with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ensure design, process, packaging, and test requirements are aligned, including design-for-reliability and manufacturability considerations.
  • Develop supplier and foundry relationships, guide joint development work, and track partner performance against technical and program objectives.
  • Use process, inspection, metrology, test, and reliability data to identify risks, improve process capability, and inform technical decisions.
  • Communicate program status, technical risks, and resource needs to executive leadership and partner organizations.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Graduate study in electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a closely related field.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in semiconductor, photonics, electronics, packaging, quality, or reliability engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams or organizations, including setting priorities, developing talent, and delivering complex programs.
  • Experience with semiconductor quality and reliability methods, qualification planning, failure analysis, and corrective action.
  • Experience with wafer-level bumping and advanced packaging or back-end interconnect technologies.
  • Experience with Optical I/O and/or high-speed electrical I/O technologies and their integration with photonic or electronic products.
  • Experience interfacing with EIC foundries or other semiconductor manufacturing partners on technology development, process integration, qualification, and production issues.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor manufacturing, process integration, design requirements, and product qualification.
  • Experience using yield, process-control, metrology, test, and reliability data to drive technical decisions and improvements.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional programs involving design, process, product, test, quality, reliability, and external partners.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to explain technical risks and decisions to both engineering teams and senior leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.
