Original job description

Location: England, with UK-wide travel Who we are We’re a global electrical engineering consultancy working with regulated utilities, renewable developers and major infrastructure owners on complex high-voltage challenges. We are 220 people globally, working across Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Our UK Earthing & Lightning Protection team works on projects across the electricity sector, combining specialist technical studies with practical site-based engineering. Why join us? You’ll join a friendly, specialist team with strong experience in Earthing & Lightning Protection. You’ll gain exposure to both the practical and analytical sides of earthing engineering, from carrying out surveys and measurements on HV sites to modelling, analysing and designing earthing systems. You’ll work alongside experienced consultants, with mentoring and hands-on project experience to help you build your technical knowledge and take on greater responsibility as your experience grows. We offer flexible working based on trust, while still valuing time together as a team. What you’ll do This is a varied role combining site-based earthing surveys and testing with earthing studies, modelling and design work. You’ll support projects for new and existing high-voltage sites across the UK, working alongside experienced members of the team while developing the knowledge and confidence to undertake site activities independently where appropriate.

Key responsibilities

  • Carrying out earthing surveys and testing at HV sites, including soil resistivity testing, earthing impedance measurements, continuity testing and visual inspections
  • Supporting the delivery of earthing system studies, modelling and analysis using CDEGS
  • Developing earthing system designs from initial concepts through to detailed design
  • Analysing site data and using the results to inform modelling and engineering recommendations
  • Producing clear, well-structured technical reports, calculations and project documentation
  • Working with colleagues and clients to solve practical earthing and electrical safety challenges
  • Supporting projects in line with relevant UK standards and network requirements
  • Contributing to project delivery, including tracking actions, risks, issues and schedules

Experience or an interest in induced voltage, AC interference or lightning protection would also be valuable, but isn’t essential. Location, travel & site work

  • The role can be based anywhere in England, with flexibility to work remotely when not required on site.
  • Site work is an important part of the role and will involve travel to projects across the UK, including England, Scotland and Wales.
  • You should expect regular site visits and surveys as part of project delivery, which may occasionally require overnight stays.
  • Site activities may include visual inspections, soil resistivity testing, electrical measurements and other earthing-related testing.
  • As your experience develops, you’ll need to be comfortable undertaking site visits and survey activities independently, as well as working alongside other members of the team.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to your own transport are required.

Experience & skills

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • This role would suit a recent graduate with relevant placement or practical experience, or someone with 1–2 years’ industry experience
  • A developing understanding of the UK electricity transmission and distribution network
  • An interest in developing specialist expertise in earthing engineering
  • Comfortable working in both site and engineering/study environments
  • Any experience with earthing studies, CDEGS, electrical testing or HV site surveys would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD tools would be helpful
  • Any exposure to induced voltage, AC interference or lightning protection would be beneficial
  • Comfortable producing clear technical reports and documentation
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Curious, practical, proactive and keen to learn
