Summary:The main function of a design engineer is to develop and design manufactured products, such as cars and home appliances. A typical design engineer needs to combine artistic talent with research on product use, marketing, and materials to create the most functional and appealing product design.Job Responsibilities:• Prepare sketches of ideas, detailed drawings, illustrations, artwork, or blueprints, using drafting instruments, paints and brushes, or computer-aided design equipment.• Modify and refine designs, using working models, to conform with customer specifications, production limitations, or changes in design trends.• Coordinate the look and function of product lines.• Confer with engineering, marketing, production, or sales departments, or with customers, to establish and evaluate design concepts for manufactured products.• Read publications, attend showings, and study competing products and design styles and motifs to obtain perspective and generate design concepts.• Design graphic material for use as illustration or advertising on manufactured materials and packaging or containers.
Skills:• Creativity, verbal and written communication skills and problem solving ability.• Basic ability to utilize various forms of media, including print, electronic and film.• Basic knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.• Previous experience using the computer to create layouts and generate new images.• Experience with Adobe imaging software (i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop), computer aided design (CAD) software and graphics software.Education/Experience:• Bachelor's degree in industrial design, architecture or engineering. Masters degree preferred.• 5-7 years experience required.
Must have NX experience, RESS (HV Battery Experience Preferred)Can execute tasks with some direction and support or with minimal guidelines and/or coaching.• Pursues developing their professional ability through shadowing, coaching or formal training. • Responsible for developing math design solutions to meet subsystem and component requirements• Exercises creative solution development with specific technical direction from DLT or Senior Designer.• Proficient in CAD Tools, Teamcenter, and has clear understanding of Standard Modeling Methods.• Developing knowledge of Vehicle Development Process and the math fidelity of each cycle; SMT Design and Engineering Best Practices; is skilled in GM CAD and Data Management System, Windows Office Suite, and Vis Mockup.• Assists other designers with design tasks when required• Develops, refines, and finalizes Criteria and Sections• Complies with Design Standards and Best Practices• Applies manufacturability, Design for Assembly, and integration knowledge to parts and subsystem designs• Actively participates in design reviews with solutions and proposals• Documents and maintains material, mass, and other part specifications within the Math file• Completes NX Analysis for their subsystem. Applies results with support of the DLT or Senior Designer• Works closely with engineers and peers to achieve product design requirements• Working knowledge of the Global Vehicle Development Process and the math fidelity for each cycle.• Integrates component and subsystem designs into systems• Keeps abreast of current product developments and trends in area of responsibility• Shares lessons learned with DLT, Manager and Designers and recommends updates to Best Practices• Creates math data (models) of moderately complex components and subsystems• Keeps Design Manger and DLT informed of project status, timing, and technical issues• Ensures high quality, on time math release of components and subsystems• Actively identifies new areas for learning and takes advantage of learning opportunities• Proficient skill set in GM CAD (NX, Teamcenter, Vis Mockup, etc...), math release process, specifications, and data management• Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others including global partners• Developing knowledge of CAE and EGD&T• Proficient knowledge of product design concepts and manufacturing processes (i.e. injection molding, stamping, extrusion, machining, etc.)• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Vis Mockup• Analytical problem-solving skills• Basic understanding of Specifications and Release terms and systems• Releases components• Strong oral and written communication skills
