About PSI

PSI is a fast-growing transportation engineering firm with 30+ years delivering award-winning infrastructure work across the DC region and beyond. We've grown from a boutique traffic engineering shop to a 50+ person firm spanning roadway design, transportation planning, software engineering, and construction management - and we're not done. Our team combines cutting-edge technology with a deep commitment to safety and innovation to solve the real operational and design challenges facing our communities' transportation systems.

PSI is rapidly growing our Construction Management & Inspection (CMI) practice across the Mid-Atlantic. As one of the few qualified DBE firms in the area, we’re positioned to support multiple projects across Virginia, from large design-build projects and bridge replacements to on-call contracts in multiple districts. We’re looking for top talent like you to help drive this project forward. This role will primarily perform work in VDOT’s Culpeper District.

About the Role

The Construction Inspector will inspect all phases of highway construction under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff. You’ll ensure construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and help provide a quality transportation system for the traveling public.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Quality Assurance inspection to verify quality and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction, under the direction of the QAM
  • Inspect and monitor field work, including excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures
  • Observe and document the Contractor’s daily production rates
  • Schedule work and inspection phases with the Contractor’s superintendent and project personnel
  • Observe, document, and communicate with the Contractor about completion of all project work elements, including identifying non-compliant work
  • Take field measurements
  • Review placement of construction materials and perform tests on them
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment
  • Oversee and enforce installation of erosion/siltation controls, highway work zones, and traffic control devices
  • Identify and document field conditions that may require design changes, and coordinate with the QAM and design team
  • Maintain QA project records, including daily inspection reports, materials documentation, test results, and non-conformance reports

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of highway construction inspection experience (completion of the VDOT Inspector Trainee program may substitute for one year)
  • Knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, and the MUTCD
  • Ability to read and interpret roadway, structure, and bridge plans and specifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management software
  • Strong record-keeping and communication skills
  • Good driving record
  • Flexibility to work day or night shifts as projects require

Certifications Required (some may be obtained within 6 months of hire)

  • VDOT Asphalt Field
  • VDOT Soils & Aggregate Compaction
  • VDOT Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
  • DEQ Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector
  • VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control (Intermediate)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design-build QA experience and familiarity with VDOT’s design-build QA/QC requirements
  • Bridge and structure inspection experience
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field

Physical Demands

Work is primarily outdoors on active construction sites in varying weather conditions. Requires standing, walking, and climbing for extended periods and the ability to lift at least 50 pounds.

What We Offer

  • Certification costs covered to keep your certifications current
  • A clear professional development plan to support your career growth
