Join Us at PlanSource: Your Exciting Career Awaits! At PlanSource, a leading cloud-based provider of benefits administration technology and services, we are on a mission to simplify how people choose, use, and manage benefits through cutting-edge, AI-powered experiences. This is an incredible time to launch your career with us!
The Manager, Software Engineering is responsible for leading and developing a team of software engineers while ensuring the delivery of high quality, scalable, and maintainable SaaS applications. This role balances people leadership, delivery accountability, and technical oversight to enable strong execution aligned with product and business goals.
Working closely with Product, Engineering, QA, and cross functional partners, the Manager, Software Engineering creates an environment where engineers can do their best work. The role sets clear expectations, supports career growth, removes delivery obstacles, and ensures teams apply modern development practices to improve quality, shorten feature development and bug fix cycle times, and strengthen reliability.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineering leader who enjoys developing people, guiding technical execution, and driving outcomes through strong teams rather than individual contribution.
The Engineering Manager has authority over team execution, staffing, coaching, delivery practices, and team-level process improvements within established company standards. Decisions affecting enterprise policy, shared platforms, security controls, organizational structure, or multiple teams require alignment with the appropriate senior engineering leader.
Key Responsibilities
People Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of software engineers across levels, fostering engagement, accountability, and growth.
- Set clear performance expectations and provide regular feedback through one on ones, goal setting, and performance reviews.
- Support career development by partnering with engineers on growth plans, skill development, and progression.
- Hire, onboard, and retain high performing engineering talent.
- Foster a culture of inclusion, learning, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
Delivery Ownership & Execution
- Own delivery outcomes for the team, ensuring commitments are met with high quality and predictable execution.
- Partner with Product Managers to plan roadmaps, scope work, and prioritize initiatives based on business impact.
- Translate product and business goals into clear execution plans and team level objectives.
- Identify delivery risks, dependencies, and constraints; proactively remove blockers and escalate when needed.
- Ensure smooth releases and operational readiness in partnership with QA and Support teams.
Technical Oversight & Standards
- Remain accountable for technical quality and adherence to engineering standards, delegate detailed design decisions to senior and lead engineers, and escalate exceptions or cross-platform decisions through the established architecture process.
- Ensure engineering best practices are followed, including code quality, testing, documentation, and operational standards.
- Support sound architectural decisions in alignment with platform strategy and long term maintainability.
- Implement approved AI practices and workflow improvements within established engineering, security, and data-protection standards. Escalate changes affecting enterprise architecture, policy, or multiple teams.
- Partner with senior and lead engineers to reinforce consistent technical standards across teams.
Cross Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product, Design, QA, and other engineering teams to ensure alignment and effective execution.
- Coordinate with nearshore and offshore engineering teams and their leaders as needed to align delivery plans, dependencies, handoffs, and knowledge sharing across time zones.
- Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to stakeholders at multiple levels.
- Advocate for the team while balancing business priorities, technical health, and delivery commitments.
Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Drive team retrospectives and collaborate with senior engineering leaders to define and implement improvement initiatives focused on delivery, quality, and collaboration.
- Improve team-level workflows, tooling, and processes within established standards; partner with senior engineering leaders on changes affecting shared platforms, policies, or multiple teams.
- Drive responsible adoption of approved AI agents, reusable skills, and tools; build team proficiency, improve workflows, and measure effects on cycle time and quality while maintaining security, engineering standards, and human accountability.
- Own implementation within the manager’s team. For cross-team initiatives, coordinate dependencies and report progress while each participating manager remains accountable for their team’s commitments.
- Support operational health by monitoring incidents, post mortems, and follow up actions.
- Contribute to broader engineering initiatives, standards, and leadership discussions.
Success Indicators
- Engineering teams consistently deliver high quality software aligned with product and business goals.
- Engineers are engaged, growing, and clear on expectations and career paths.
- Delivery commitments are met with predictability and transparency.
- Codebases and systems remain healthy, maintainable, and well tested over time.
- Teams consistently adopt approved AI practices and reusable skills, producing measurable improvements in delivery cycle time and quality while maintaining security, engineering standards, clear ownership, and human accountability.
- Stakeholders report strong collaboration, communication, and trust in execution.
