Original job description

Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

As a Senior Product Manager on Constellation Services, you will own the strategy and roadmap for two products - Direct Access Service (DAS) and Enterprise Ground Segment (EGS) - that give customers increasing levels of direct control over satellite tasking, data privacy, and operations. You'll translate customer and market needs into product vision, working across engineering, legal, and commercial teams to bring new capabilities to market.

This is a high-impact opportunity for a PM with a solid technical background in satellite systems who is comfortable owning multiple products at different stages of maturity, from early customer co-development to broader commercial availability. The ideal candidate is able to work as part of a global team supporting Planet's mission to image the entire Earth every day and make global change visible, accessible, and actionable.

This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco or Arlington, VA office 3 days per week.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Own the product vision and strategy for Direct Downlink Software Products, and Constellation Ownership Operational Software Products (DAS and EGS): synthesize patterns across deals, RFIs and customer conversations to resolve where the two products meet customer needs, where they should extend, and where real gaps exist.
  • Partner with Mission Delivery to turn contract requirements into PRDs and an agreed-upon roadmap for both products in parallel, then work with program management, engineering, ground systems, and satellite operations to design, build, and launch reliable, secure, and scalable capabilities.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customer-facing teams (e.g., Sales, Customer Success, and Support) for CxS offerings, enabling pre-sales and post-sales support.
  • Work with compliance and security teams to ensure all products and services adhere to export control laws, national security constraints, and data privacy standards.
  • Develop pricing models and packaging in coordination with finance and commercial leadership.
  • Monitor product performance, customer satisfaction, and operational SLAs; identify areas for improvement and lead initiatives to address them.
  • Create and maintain product documentation, customer onboarding materials, and training content to support adoption.
  • Represent the company in customer meetings, industry forums, and with government stakeholders where necessary.
  • Stay informed of competitor capabilities and market trends to ensure Planet’s CxS products remain competitive and differentiated.

What You Bring:

  • 10+ years of Product Management experience, including the ability to define product vision, build roadmaps, prioritize features, and deliver high-impact outcomes.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Eligible for US Export Control licenses such as ITAR and EAR.
  • Track record of identifying gaps and driving solutions without waiting for direction, ability to make judgment calls in ambiguous, dynamic situations.
  • Ability to understand and represent the needs of government, defense, and commercial customers with high-security or mission-critical requirements.
  • Deep understanding of satellite ground systems, RF communications, tasking conops, downlink/uplink processes, and data processing pipelines.
  • Experience managing complex products with cross-functional teams (engineering, legal, operations, security, sales) and external stakeholders, ideally including regulatory or export-control-sensitive contexts.
  • Systems-level product thinking: able to see how a product decision in DAS or EGS ripples into adjacent parts of Planet's portfolio, and proactively design for those connections rather than solving in isolation.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity: proactively synthesizing signal from customer conversations, RFIs, and win/loss patterns into a defensible product position and driving it forward.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and judgment: able to read team dynamics and build trust across functions with different incentives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and translate them for executives or government stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills; ability to prioritize across multiple concurrent, high-stakes workstreams.

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Direct experience with secure communications architectures, satellite command/control systems, or mission control software.
  • Experience working with or as part of the Defense and Intelligence community.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.
  • Technical software background that enables fluent, credible collaboration with engineering teams on architecture and design tradeoffs.

Application Deadline:

11:45p / 23:45 PT on the date stated below. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. This posting may be removed earlier than projected if a suitable pool of applications has been received. For this reason, we recommend applying as soon as you are able to.

EAR/ITAR Requirements:

This position requires access to export-controlled information, and as such, employment (or hiring of a contractor) is contingent upon the candidate’s ability to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
