Original job description

At Pattern Bioscience, we’re tackling antibiotic resistance, named by the CDC as one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. We use AI and single-cell analysis to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.

Our team is brought together by shared passion for our mission to improve the world’s most important health decisions. However, we’re not only invested in combating antibiotic resistance; we’re also invested in our people.

We are looking for a teammate, a problem solver, someone who is persistent, passionate, and loves to see projects to completion. As a Senior R&D Hardware Technician, you will join our Hardware team and bring your hands-on experience to support assembling, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading medical diagnostic devices.

This position offers you the opportunity to join a mission-driven, entrepreneurial company that values openness and collaboration, where you can have ownership and make an impact on lifesaving technology, innovation, and your fellow teammates. You are highly skilled in the operation, maintenance, and construction of mechanical systems that include electrical components. As the R&D Hardware Engineering Technician you will support the hardware engineering team complete designs, run tests, fabricate parts, and assemble electromechanical devices.

Responsibilities

Execute engineering and verification test programs with engineering guidance: set up, run, collect and analyze data, and report results
Own the assembly, disassembly, and upgrade of test fixtures, prototypes, and commercial instruments
Troubleshoot system-level issues across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software, and partner with engineers to drive root cause and resolution
Contribute to test methods, work instructions, and standard operating procedures
Build or rework printed circuit boards (PCBAs) and wire harnesses
Build, test, and release instruments and modules per work instructions, and identify improvements to build and test processes
Support the instrument service depot: receive, evaluate, repair, refurbish, and return instruments, documenting findings to support failure trending
Perform maintenance, hardware upgrades, and software/firmware updates on the internal and customer instrument fleet
Perform incoming inspection of components and PCBAs
Keep complete, accurate records in a regulated environment, and help manage lab safety, inventory, and calibration

We'd Love to Hear from You If You (Desired Traits)

Are a strong team player - you communicate openly, share knowledge, and help your teammates succeed. This is a must.
Work independently: take a test plan or work instruction and run with it, raising issues and conflicts early
Troubleshoot problems systematically and methodically, basing decisions on evidence
Follow procedures, document your work completely, and know when something needs to be escalated
Interpret assembly drawings, CAD models, cable drawings, electrical schematics, and Bills of Materials
Use hand and bench tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes, soldering and de-soldering equipment, and calipers with high proficiency
Are a self-starter with a desire to build products that help improve patient outcomes

Desired Education, Experience, and Technical Abilities

Associate's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology or similar, or equivalent technical certificate or military training
Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience with complex electromechanical systems in R&D, manufacturing, or service
Experience executing test protocols and documenting results
Proficient with Word and Excel; experience with work-tracking tools (Azure DevOps, Jira, etc.)
Able to lift up to 50 lbs

Skills or Abilities Considered a Plus:

Strong software skills: Linux command line, Python or other scripting for test automation and data analysis, and deploying instrument software/firmware
Experience building or servicing instruments in a regulated medical device environment (ISO 13485 / FDA QMSR)
Depot repair, field service, or production build experience
Have worked on benchtop biotech or life science instruments
IPC certification (IPC-A-610 / J-STD-001) or machine shop experience
A bachelor's degree in engineering may be considered in place of years of experience
